for the OP, you will have to check what its for, as for the second guy, you ruined your seat occupancy sensor in the passenger seat.

the sensor is really sensitive and when it goes bad the airbag light is tripped. its not "dangerous" because in the even of a crash the passenger airbag will deploy now as well. compared to if the light was off only the driver side would deploy.

fixing it is a pita because its inside the seat.

best of luck

You can read airbag codes and reset with Carsoft, Peake SRS tool, BMW diagnostics software or the dealer.

SRS light can not be reset by disconnecting battery.

Common causes of SRS problems are passenger seat sensor mat or unplugging SRS connector without disconnecting car battery.

I had a 525i that the airbag light tripped on. I figured I might have tweaked the passenger seat sensor mat with my left elbow while checking out fuses in the glovebox. I used Carsoft to clear SRS light and it never returned. YMMV.

Check under your seat and ensure all wires are connected and the harness is connected to the underside of the seat and not on the floor. Reset the codes and you should be sweet.

If its the passenger seat sensor then there's a $5 Radio Shack diode fix out there. Search around a bit and you'll find it (I think on Roadfly). I did it to mine and it worked great. Make sure that you unplug the battery before taking the seat out though.

You will still need to reset the SRS code with a SRS scanner or some such before the light will go out of course.

I have never used any of these tools (as my SRS airbag light has never gone on because I use more garlic than most of you) ... but these links should help:

- What can cause an SRS airbag light (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) & what tools reset the fault (1) (2) (3) (4) & what happens when window regulator fixers disconnect the airbag before the battery or they connect the battery before disconnecting the airbag (1) (2) (3) & where to buy an airbag occupancy sensor bypass unit (1) (2).

My car's airbag light is coming on then it go off after a while, it doesn't happen that frequent but it has been this way for the past 1 year, I have yet to be able to resolve the problem, suspect faulty connector but don't know which one! now that i read this post, I am going to check the connector under the seat.

For the record, here's a suggested airbag tool:
- E39 (1997 - 2003) > Airbag Light came on after regulator repair

Just go to ebay and search "B800 SRS Airbag Light Reset Scan Tool for BMW E36 E46". Beats the $100+ dealer and specialized parts I see discussed in these forumns.
