Thanks in advance.

Me too

I would love to know as well. Looking to get into an M5 for under $50k so I am sure I will have to get an 06 or 07. What are some things I should be watching out for, or that I should know going into it that I am going to have to repair/maintain? Thanks!

M5 2006: When new I got bad computer bus cable. 4 weeks to get it replaced. Oil leakage from factory almost lost engine...! Bad Windshield Glass seals. Bad steering wheel leather quality and materials. i-Drive Vehicle Service menu disappeared. Bad Alternator at 26k miles. Puerto Rico Dealer replaced battery under warranty, but reported bad alternator after warr expired! Giving up lease after 4 yrs. Got new 550i M Sport with M5 driver side exhaust, spoiler, etc. DON'T get this car without CPO and extended warranty and service option (100k/6yrs).

Personally, I think you got a bad apple. I purchased my 2006 M5 in 2007 used. I've had issues but they are all minor. I still own the car today. I have 22,000 miles on it. The only I have to pay for is tires. I replace them every 10,000 miles, not by choice. They wear out fast.
I purchased a FULLY loaded, every option you could possible get, M5. I love the car. But I must say, I also own a 2005 M3 Convertible that I have NEVER had a problem. Both cars have SMG.

Well they're certainly available for cheap - here's a local one for only $32k, 2006 with 50k miles.

Guess nobody wants one outside of warranty.

I highly suggest the 08s+ due to the LCI update. It makes the car look a bit more modern. Overall, by 2008, they pretty much fixed all the little nagging issues. Plus you have plenty of warranty remaining. Gas I admit does cost a pretty penny b/c it chugs it so fast. But then again, the M5 isn't for everyone. If you can't afford to pay to play, then I suggest you get something more mundane. I see a lot of ppl trying to get into the M5 market by picking up the cheaper 06-7s. Those cars have lower resale b/c they are buggy (some, not all) and little or no warranty left. What you save on purchase price will cost you more in the long run in repairs outside of warranty. The real gems are the 09-10s b/c they have the newer HD based Navi and iDrive. The older iDrives are sluggish.

BTW, BMW is going away from the F1 V10 and to the TT V8. IMO, this makes the E60 M5 the most unique M5 to date. Nothing beats hearing that V10 roar. Its absolutely addicting. I drive with my windows open just so I can hear the engine wail!

I was running with a GTR, NSX, and another Sepang M5 the other night and it was just amazing! The NSX was the only car not on par.

Exclamation used M5 w/o warranty?

I guess you may be able to take your car for certification (CPO) at a BMW dealer and then purchase both extended warranty and service. There are several option packages to cover up to 85k miles or 100k miles, depending on how much you want to pay. I did not take it for my 2006 M5 (26,954 miles . I rather keep it for minimal use or sell it.

Although a somewhat old thread I hear the advice I am looking for. I agree 'famous' it is scary.

I was looking at this: http://www.autotrader.com/cars-for-s...38115838&Log=0

Input? I don't like the fact that a Ford dealership is selling it thus I feel they don't really know what they have. It's on me to know everything about this car.

I went back and forth between the C55, E55 and M5. Settling on the M5.

The potential mechanic ghosts of this M5 (E60) worry me from the standpoint of one fix after another. I don't fear working on a car. I have done head gasket jobs, clutch replacement, rear end replacement and so on on the vehicles I've owned. I just don't want my first BMW to be a regret. Don't want a problem child.

My alternative is a 550i.

Helpful feedback desired.

Like previously mentioned, if you're gonna buy used, get the latest and greatest of that generation. I would avoid 06-7. Look for an 08-10. Those are the LCI cars that got the revised interior, lights, SMG, and updated software.

Sound advice. I'm walking away from this one. Doesn't feel right. Nice color though.

Dont let maint and repair bring you down.Just fix them and move on .I just came off a 1500 mile trip .The 06 m5 was fantastic.Everyone i meet loves the car.I love the safty of SMG trans provides .Willow has been a real star. I was impressed withthe performance and luxuary of the supercar i have had no real problems.I think that the v10 engine is indestructable. The engine is a perfect match for the car . If you love to drive the o6 BMW M5/// defines what is the utimate driving experiance.

I'd be happier if the car came from a BMW dealership or had no more than two owners. As is now with multiple owners - five and having a leased history I'm concerned.

The last owner is obviously the Ford dealership and the previous was a guy who had it for two weeks. Going through a "mid life" crisis according to the sales manager.

Would hate to miss out on a good deal but that raises another question: Being well under NADA if it is a good deal then why is the car still there?

His final offer is $28.5k out the door. Tempting. The 08's+ will only get cheaper with time. I can wait.
