Hello Guys,
I am about to buy a '01 525i. I am a bit worried about the mileage, it's currently 129k miles. Is this too much for a nine year old E39? Thanks |

The average American puts in about 12-15K miles a year.

Thanks for your reply.
What is the performance of a 525 like at such an age? |

Midexus - It's almost completely dependant upon the maintenance and type of driving the car has undergone. If the car has been properly maintained, that engine should be golden. The car will have weak points, which should be addressed in a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) done by a BMW mechanic. This will give you an idea of what expenses you should expect shortly after purchase.
The BMW inline sixes (as the 525i is) are fantastic engines attached to solid transmissions. When properly maintained, there's really no limit to their useful life.

I'm just over 99k on my 1999. Delivery was, IIRC, 04/99.

I have 98,000 on my 1999 528i. I'm about to replace the radiator and expansion tank as a preventitive measure. I've rebuilt the front suspension and fixed a small oil leak from the oil filter housing. But, the engine and drive train perform like they are brand new. I typically get over 200,000 miles out of a car and expect no less from this one. One just has to take care of them.

My bmw is just reaching 180k miles right now. Still golden, no leaks, no engine/transmission problems. Maintenance is the key for 1 million mile mark.
I mean cmon, my instructor has a 1997 (?) Ford Windstar and he just reached 200k mile mark, all he did was maintenance, had to replace intake manifold (for some reason, cause it cracked on him) and thats it! Im surprised its a ford LOL

I have 140k miles, drive ~20,000 miles/year (city and highway), have done some preventative maint and some "as needed". Engine is strong, car very solid. For a 2001 with 129k miles, it should be quite low cost and a nice ride. Just try to make sure you have another ride available when something happens which it will. But I plan to drive my 525 a long time.

147k on my 540i; drives like new!--no leaks of any kind and does not burn oil at all. Yes, it takes active preventative maintenance to keep it that way....

96K on my 01 525iA with no significant problems. Had to replace oil housing gasket as it was leaking. Otherwise it's a great cruiser and very confortable with about 32mpg. How much are they asking?

32 mpg? How are you doing that? I've never seen anything close. I know Ohio is flat but I didn't think downhill in all directions.

I should have said that 32mpg is about what I get on a trip. I think it was going to Florida down 95. I have averaged around 30 mpg on some jaunts though. Sorry for misleading anyone.

30 is also very very good. I get about 24 around town and 28 on trips through NE.
