Random engine trouble...

Hi,

My car is a BMW 520i (2.0) from 1996 (December).

I've begun to experience problems with the engine especially when it's warm. If I turn off the engine after it's been running for a while and try to start it again, it won't start immediately...

When i'm driving i'll experience some loss of power when RPM's are low and I accelerate - if the engine goes out it's difficult to start again. When RPM are high it "seems" fine.

About the time when the problems began it would turn off randomly, when the car was idle. It usually comes without warning and there aren't any visible symptoms in the dashboard that warn me that something is about to happen.

About 6 months ago I cleaned the MAF and haven't had any problems with the car since now, could this be related? I'm unsure as to what the symptoms would be if I had accidentally damaged it.

I'm going to have the fault codes read at some point, but I was hoping someone could help meanwhile

Thanks for reading.

Maybe the fuel filter is clogged. You may also try to clean the throttle body & the ICV with something like carbureator cleaner.

Scott0357,

Thanks for the tip.

I had the fault codes read and apparently both the crankshaft speed sensor and the MAF was broken... The MAF is easy enough to change, but I think i'll have to remove the fan and shroud in order to change the crankshaft speed sensor :/

Haven't been able to find any guides on that for the M52 engine.

I think i'll check out the fuel filter anyway, I don't think it's ever been changed.
