Newbie Shopping for a Z3 Looking for Tips

Hi,

I'm a newbie here shopping for a Z3 and looking for tips on buying one. I do know i want a 6 cylinder model with lower mileage. I drove a 98 model today with 64k that ran good, everything worked and it seemed real tight - the only concern i had was that i smelled burning oil after the car warmed up but couldn't find any leaking on the groud below the car. The salesman told me the valve cover bolts needed to be tightened but of course i don't believe anthing the salesman tells me lol. Any input would be appreciated.

Thank

If the car otherwise looks good and has service documentation, arrange for a PPI. An honest seller will agree to this. Here is an excellent thread documenting common Z3 issues.

I'm assuming you're considering a roadster. These are plentiful, and this time of year, the market is very soft. If the car you're considering doesn't check out, keep looking

thanks for the reply - in the link you provided i see the S54 mentioned along with issues concerning it - which engine is this? I looked it up and it appears to be a 3.2 liter engine but the only ones i have seen are 2.5, 2.8, and 3.0 - are these prone to the same issues?

THanks again

The S54 is a Motorsport engine offered in the Z3 platform in 2001-2002 in the M variants. It is a rare find to be honest. Any seller with an S54 will command a significantly higher price. The rod bearing issue was unique to the S54 and especially the ones installed in the E46 M3 as it was programmed with a higher redline than in the Z3 platform

THanks - i like the color of your car but it must not be very common as i've never seen one in that color before.

Thanks. The color is Montreal Blue offered through the 2000 model year. BMW four and six cylinder engines are all quite reliable if properly maintained. The cooling system is a weak link, especially the water pump in the earlier model years, and should be replaced by 60k miles. There are many owners who have exceeded 200k miles with routine maintenance

If you're in my area, I'd be happy to help you look one over. I don't offer any sort of PPI guarantee, but I have probably had my hands in more Z3s than most non-dealer shops.

Great but while I am going to look through this forum do you know of a similar posting for the Z4?

Thinking about an 08 Z4 3.0si Coupe: http://www.cars.com/go/search/detail...acktype=usedcc

So far my only hestiation is that it is being sold by a non-BMW dealer. Going to ask my dealer's service dept if they can run the service record as I don't trust CARFAX reports.

Wow, a lot of nice people on this board - I live south of orlando but the car I am looking at is in south orlando near the Bee Line and airport. The car is on a lot and i'd more than welcome you taking a look. I did an autocheck and everything checks out. (can i post links to sites with cars I'm looking at on here?)
