E39 (1997 - 2003)

Recall- strange noise from fan?

Anyone know about any recalls on a 2000 540i?

Other night i noticed a whining noise coming from under the hood. Haven't checked it out yet but my guess it may be fan as noise disappears. My indy mentioned there may have been a recall and to check into it

thoughts?

Check with the dealer on a recall.

Under what conditions does the noise stop? Could also be alternator or idler bearings.

I doubt the electric fan is running in the winter, so check the clutch on the mechanical fan with the engine stopped. The fan should move like it's in molasses. If not movable at all, get the clutch changed immediately, before the blades break off and wreak havoc under the hood.

Noisy engine fan operation is a pretty common complaint here. I found a Technical Service Bulletin from BMW noting that after the fan recall is performed, customers may complain of noisy operation...
