Welcome...the Z3 sound system really needs everything changed to make it sound good - throwing speakers into the stock amp/head unit will not give you much imrovement.
Lots of threads on the subject, try the search feature and read some of them for more info.

I upgraded JUST the speakers in my 96 Z3 and it made a vast improvement. I can now actually hear the music. Of course it needs a sub and a few other things, which will eventually be done but I will not ever replace the head unit. I love how the original one looks. I used the kit from BSW (bavariansoundwerks), easy-peasy to install and has made a good improvement. Worth a gander.

Way back when in my '97 Z3, I kept the head unit, but replaced everything south of that. I swapped out the door and kick-panel speakers for MB Quart components and put two 10" kicker free-air subs in the trunk. Power was from two 75W/Channel Precision Power amps. I used the stock wiring where possible.
It was loud and sounded great.

i agree i have a 98 Z3 and i redid everything
that crappy sub in between the roll bars i pulled out it was worthless i put like zuzax 2 10in kicker subs with a sony xplod 2 channel amp but it leaves no trunk room left thou and i just installed 2 new 5in kicker speakers with tweeters and it sounds awesome i suggest replacing everything because within 6mths of having the car i blew the crappy sub and there speakers out and replaced the cassette player with a new sony xplode stereo and everything else .........go loud or go home |

The paper speakers tend to dry rot and disintegrate, so thats always an easy fix with ANY after market speakers.
I would also replace the amp. Its pretty simple really since all the wires etc are in the trunk.

Great ideas; I'd like to do the speakers in my '98 at the least. Since I'm over 50 I wont need any exotic amps or subs but the stock system is kind of crappy at high speeds.
Gotta have my Led Zeppelin, dude!!

Even then you will probably end up replacing the amplifier after a while. The stock amp just isn't robust enough, unless you like your Zepplin as soft ambient background music.

Custom Stereo install
Blew out the factory rears twice the 1st 6 months. (top always down!) Gave up and went w/ custom install. (see receipt att.) Best $$ I ever spent on my Z...
