Buying a 1978 320i - advice please

Hi everyone. I am recently selling my Chevy S-10 and I think I'm going to buy a 1978 320i/E30 M Series 5 speed, BBS basketweaves w/Firestone Affinity tires(VGC), factory tint windows, cloth seats. It recently had a complete tune-up w/Bavarian Auto lifetime wires, new coil, new clutch, press. plate, t-bearing.

He is asking for 1600, I'm offering 1300. He said he is taking. But I live in Buffalo, and it would need to make it through one winter here before I have the money to buy another beater. Can anyone tell me what I can expect from this car? It is older than me but I drove it and I love it.

If you dont know about those cars than stay away. Im thinking you dont since you called it an M series. There was no 5 speed stock in 1978. So it could be modified or just another false.

Get an E30. They still have parts for those. I drive an 81 320is which has the five speed, LSD, Recaros, etc. Anything can and does go wrong on a car that old. Trust me, I know.

The fuel injection system you have (if stock) is one of the last of the mechanical fuel injection cars. While very robust, at this age very troublesome and complicated to fix. The front suspension is a bear to fix. Steering racks are usually dead or very loose at this point. Since it has the what I am assuming is the E30 M3 tranny, it has custom driveshaft and god knows what for a rear diff. Rust is the main concern after mechanicals. Again, much cheaper in the long run to find a sun state rust free car than to repair.

I always push people away from these cars and most BMWs for that matter unless they have a big wallet or the tools and knowledge to do their own repairs.

Id love to see pics. They are truly worth a thousand words.

I think this is an old post.. so did you buy it? I have an 83 BMW 320i and its all stock. I was the 3rd owner and even though it still runs Ive had it for 6 years.. "long story to its current state" but its been a great car.. the CIS injection system can be a little unreliable in its older state, but as long as you do routine maintenance it will last quite some time. The more research I've been doing, the late 70s modes seem to have something a bit more special that everyone seems to go for. There before the CIS injection so I've heard there more reliable. Good find in my opinion.

Good decision on ditching the Chevy and going with a BMW. You won't regret the decision as they are great cars.
