Detailed starter install instructions for e38

My starter did a funny thing today, it made a click noise when i went to start the car. I tried again and the car started right up. It hasnt done it again, but it does concern me that the starter may be going out and will leave me stranded.. I am savy with tools, but cannot seem to find a "how to" for the starter install..

I am wondering if it wasnt an ignition switch issue, but either way id like to know where the starter is, how to access it ect..

After further searching, I am thinking the battery or connections may be bad. I will check that tomorrow...

Connections are fine.. Any links to the replacement of the starter and or alternator (1997 740i)

I think you should try to pinpoint the problem first. Did it only happen that one time? Did it make just one loud click or were there many clicks back to back? Did you check the electrical connections on the starter, or just the battery? Did you get the charging system checked out? Did the lights on the dash dim or go out completly when the click happened?

I haven't had to change any electrical parts on my car yet, so I can't help you there but the starter should be under the car, facing front, and located somewhere around where the engine and transmission meet. You should check out www.e38.org and see if you get any info there. I also keep hearing about a bentley manual that people use to help them with these cars.

One click, has happened twice.

I checked battery connections. I also unlocked the dash ecu and checked voltage (11.9v while car off with lights on) and 13.9v while the car is running.

I looked on e38.org no instructions there..

Well the alternator sounds good, and if your talking about the headlights, then the battery sounds good too.

It could very well be the starter going out but first check to see if the ground wire coming out of the battery is tightly grounded to the car. You should also check to see if the power wire is connected tightly to the starter. I would also do a charging system test anyway since most auto part stores do it for free.
