iPod does not shut down w/car radio

iPod does not shut down w/car radio

My iPod (8GB, model MB748LL) has the latest software (v 1.0.4) yet, doesn't want to turn off when my X6 shuts down, which then leads to the battery running out (car stops charging). When I restart the car, the iDrive can't find the iPod (b/c the battery is dead) so it defaults to FM Radio.
Anyone know a fix? I don't see any obvious settings in the iPod.
