Rear Window Shades?

My brother just brought a 00' 528i. Upon further inspection I found that his rear doors and back window had sun shades. I found this very odd because I did not know that these cars came with this feature. If any of you guys have this feature let me know and post pics please. Thanks

The sun shades in the rear doors, along with the power-operated rear deck sun shade, were an option ($575) on e39's.

$575 option and it costs $220 per a shade (thats right each shade not including the electric) to replace one. Its makes me furious. Both my passenger side shades are f*cked and the stealer wants $440.

BUMP!

Has anyone ever installed the rear sun shades on an E39, that originally does not have them?

Can this be done?
Do you need new rear door panels?

I've done it. You need new interior window frames, new door panels, new interior door moldings, the shade units, and some small hardware. Parts vary depending on whether you have chrome, shadowline, or high gloss shadowline and single or double pane windows (not really a concern in the US). To do it with new parts would be in the $2000 range for the rear doors alone. Add another $700 for the electric rear shade. Definitely something you want a parts car for.

WOW!
That's a tad out of my price range.
I have the chrome trim, but would live to upgrade to the shadow trim.
Do the all the M5 door panels have the slots for the shades?
I know someone selling some used M5 door panels...

Thanks!
Jason

I have never seen the after market shades, only OEM.
Where do you get them (after-market shades)?
Thanks!

Not all M5s have them. The rear door shades are not available with the full leather interior, and it was an option anyway. You can tell instantly by looking though.

i find that the side shades plus my rear tint actually make it hotter. The rear shade up, sides down is the best combination. 25% rear tint 35% front.

Yes I too have the shades in my car but just earlier this month my rear shade just popped and fell to the down position. As I looked at it closer I noticed it had broken from the control arms which raise and lower it. I really enjoyed that option but don't want to pull any unnecesary money out of my pocket to have it repaired.

This is a strange phenomenon. I had never heard of this happening until just a couple months ago maybe. Since then I've seen 3 or 4 reports of this problem.

I have this problem. Looks like the plastic clips broke due to weathering. I can't raise my rear shade. Has anyone tried to fabricate the clips? I believe I saw something on it. I'm trying to find it right now.

Got them on my car too, but no rear shade option on the Touring (obviously). Never used them myself, but the rear seat passengers seem to love 'em

I made one out of black window screening, some grommets and a few suction cups with hooks. The whole thing cost less than $20 including the tool that is used to install the grommets. Came out much better than I expected. Blocks out the sun and vision is unimpaired, even at night. I leave it up permanently.
Don't buy that cheap crap you see on ebay.

I just retro fitted the rear electric shade, which seemed to be quite simple thanks to Tyrone and many others who helped. Spent $100 on rear electric shade + deck, used from a partout.

I have them on my 540 and also have double glazed windows. One side just broke the other day. The previous owner did a make shift repair that looked bad anyway. I've already replaced the two smaller quarter window ones..
