it really could be anything. most of the time, its the oil seperator valve located on the intake maifold. not a very expensive piece. could even be the actual oil seperator which is considerably more difficult and expensive to replace.

my car had this white smoke problem when i bought it a year ago. it was some type of cold start valve, which was making it run way too rich. you may want to give the exhaust a smell to see if it smells oily, like fuel, or like coolant. honestly you probably need to take it to a certified mechanic. might want to get a few different mechanics to look at it also as they may try to screw around and tell you to replace parts that arent related, mainly to get you to spend money. that said, try and find a good honest independent mechanic.

95 was a bad year for the e38. Engines were made with Nikasil making the earlier year e38 a weak engine block. The engines have been known to suffer damage to the cylinder bores from the excessive amounts of sulphur in the US fuels. Sulphur reacts adversely with the Nickel , causing very slight blemishes in the top few millimeters of the cylinder bore. The cylinder bores are crosshatched, which is the name given to a pattern scratched into the surface of the cylinder wall. These scratches help seat and seal the piston rings, allowing good compression.

Clearly stated...the smoke could be simply the burning off of sulphur and nickel in your combustion chambers.

BMW changed the engine completely from Nikasil to Alusil in 1997 in which they created a much better block. Redesigned thus causing the 4.0 to the 4.4L change.

The 95 and 96 e38's are cars to watch out for...it's kinda like buying an 02-03 745.

I don't know much to tell you...but I do know to stay away from 87 and 89 fuels. The 95 and 96 engines need a higher octane fuel because the additives in those low octane fuels will harm your engine more. 93 will have less additives and will burn more efficiently. Also try using a fuel stabilizer.

Seafoam your engine oil, and your intake to clean the deposits from your engine.

For the E38, it should have been only 1995 in the USA.

Here is one of the best articles on the topic, plus an introduction/update from 2004:
