X drive in the snow

I live in Maryland and this winter we have been belted with snow. My present 7 series is terrible in the snow. I believe getting snow tires will help. Just checking in to see if anyone has the X drive and does it make a difference in the snow.

Xdrive will help, but dedicated winter tires are a better choice. All wheel-drive can get you started on snow, but snow tires will help you turn and stop. Which do you think is more important?

Tires are the most important pices of your car! Nothing else has ground contact. xDrive can help you to get more traction but good tires are essential. So if you have bought xDrive for winter weather buy winter tires to get grip.

One more thing you should always remember. With all-weel-drive you will excelerate faster than others. But it does not help you when you have to break.

Just drove my xDrive in the snow earlier today. We got around a foot up here in NY. I must say I am truly surprised how well it handles. The previous 7's I have had were pretty much unusable in the snow. Great traction, no slipping and no skidding on acceleration. I can actually say handles the snow as well as my Range Rover.

I'm in the Hudson Valley where we got as much as 30"+ and I was one of the few drivers on the road yesterday. The X-drive really impressed me - even without snow tires. Snow tires are probably more important than AWD, but at least I was able to get around without fear of getting stuck. Far better performer in the snow than my 4Runner!

What size tires do you guys have, 18" 19" or 20"? I am looking a 750ix it has the M sport package and 20" tires. Can't seem to find any aftermarket rims with winter or all season tires.

If you really have snow in your area and you have not chosen the xDrive just for fun, there is no question that you need winter tires. All season tires are nothing but a bad compromise for compact cars.

The size is not that important. What gives winter tires more grip is the width, the smaller the better. This is not only because of the better grip on snow, it's also better on wet roads. I wouldn't drive ugly 8.5's on my 750iX but I would propose not to go for more than 9.5'.

245/45R19, actually. They're the same size (I think) as the OEM front tires on the '09 Sport. I just put the same width tire on the back, too.

I know a lot of people are partial to the Blizzaks, but I've never been a fan. I've always had good luck with the Dunlop snows, clear back to my first 7 in '02.
