Slightly OT: Looking for a travel buddy for a different type of ED...
Hey everyone,
Sorry if this is slightly OT, but this group is so casual and enthusiastic about European travel and all things BMW that I thought I'd post here. I'm a past ED'r and in addition I've imported older European cars on my own several times before. I'm in the midst of planning a trip to pick up a vintage BMW, a (Neue Klasse) Turf 1966 1800 located in Berlin. See it here: http://www.youngtimer.biz/gallery2/m...?g2_itemId=247 My planned itinerary is to fly into Brussels morning of 4/8, take a discount Easyjet flight to Berlin (50 Euro) pick up the car, spend the night there and drive the next day (Friday) to Essen (530 km) to attend Techno Classica on Saturday, the largest classic car show in Europe. Sunday; drive to Brussels, stay with a friend that night then Monday drive the car to Zeebrugge and back to Brussels and then depart the next day back to the US. My usual travel partners (wife or kids) can't come along this time so I'm particularly interested in having someone to come along for the long leg: Berlin to Essen. Feel free to pm me or dial my cell at (six five one) - two seven zero- eighty one twenty two (Wisconsin, USA GMT -0700) Last edited by Luis A.; 02-26-2010 at 11:41 AM. |

Thanks for the comments guys. I need all the reassurance in the world because even extracting a discount from the seller this is one expensive car...
![]() Hey Irv, c'mon, you can delegate it all for a long weekend, bring your phone and keep your empire running while we do this..

Hey Luis:
Wow - what a tempting offer. If not for this blasted economy, I'd be especially interested in attending Techno Classica. Hope you get a compatible co-pilot. Looks also as though you enjoy the simple basic cars of years gone by, given the Cinquecento and Deux Cheveaux in your stable. I'm so fond of the 60s-70s 500-series Fiats I was tempted to lift one up by the bumper and roll it back to my hotel for a souvenir during my ED trip last year (pic below). Nice also to have the earlier cars as a comparison to what's available today. Took my '74 Jensen-Healey ragtop for a drive yesterday and the E93's ride was like a limo compared to it. Have fun and by all means post-up some words and pics when you go.

Luis:
I am VERY envious and wish I could take the time. The closest we came to a similar occasion was when a former student arranged with an oldtimer restoration shop to loan us a Mercedes 219 for a day, back in 2003. (Photo below.) I think it was the same model as the first European car I had ridden in, so it brought back memories as well as being lots of fun. Have a great trip.

Sounds like a great time - my wife would probably hurt me if I went to Europe without her, though! Good luck!
Also, I would recommend you pull your cell down or spell it out, so phishers can't steal it and start harassing you.

Gorgeous, gorgeous car... congratulations.
I wish I could join you, sounds like an interesting trip. I'm also toying with the idea of importing 2 very different (and both newer) cars - and Audi 100 (don't shoot me please) and a BMW Z1. Dreams dreams...

But if it has AT, you might want to shoot yourself. I have a friend who worked as an Audi service writer during the bad years. He was trained to tell everyone who brought in their 100 with a dead AT "We have never seen that before. I'll write it up."

Of course - I'm looking for a 78-82 100 with 4 or 5 cyl engine and manual transmission, purely for sentimental reasons.

Hi 1985mb (name?),
This place is simply amazing, a classic car enthusiast's dream: www.meilenwerk.de and located inside it are several classic car dealers (and more) and even glass enclosed garages for private owners to display their masterpieces. The dealer next to the one selling the BMW is Thiesen www.thiesen-berlin.de and he has some serious iron there, including the Mercedes and Bentley you see.. |
