I've searched here and the broad internet and can't find any good answers to this.
So I have a trip coming up and wanted to keep it free-flowing, i.e. maybe choose the day before the next city I'm going to travel to. So my Q: Is Priceline generally going to be an effective method for me to get a 4* hotel room for the day right after I'm bidding? Or are there typically no cheapo Priceline rooms left at hotels if you wait until the day before? tia!! |

I'm not an expert on Priceline but they sell rooms at hotels that are underbooked. I would think that this would include last minute opportunities BUT this will greatly diminish your chances of getting a room at any particular hotel. As long as you are in a location with several larger properties you might be OK. That said, I am too anal to wait till the day before to make a reservation. The only exception would be staying in Gasthofs in Germany or Austria. If you stop in the smaller towns there is almost always a Gasthof with an available room but you have to be OK with not having a private bath in some locations.

+1 for rmorin's response. I'll also add that going the priceline route can result in you paying more if hotels are booked up due to a concert/conference/sporting event. Probably a small risk however.
