Att BSW - radio/Dice issue

Hi - 2000 540i, 128,000 miles

Car has Nav (Mark II, I think), 4x3 screen in the dash, and the CD changer was swapped out for a DICE ipod unit about 2 years ago, which has worked flawlessly for me.

About 6 weeks ago my AM radio started cutting out. By cutting out I mean no sound at all save for some very low background hum. The Nav screen still showed the station info, but there was no sound. Flipping to FM or the ipod, then back, brought it back. Then it would not come back until the car was re-started. FM and the ipod were fine, so I checked all the antenna connections behind the C-pillars, and to the radio in the trunk. No help. The car needed a battery so I replaced it. No effect. It got worse and worse, then the AM stopped working altogether.

Then I noticed the alarm had stopped beeping.

About 3 weeks ago both the FM and the ipod started cutting out. Driving along, and they'd just stop for a second, then come back. Could not tell if switching inputs had any effect, because I could not hit them fast enough.

Disconnecting the Dice unit from the CD changer hookup had no effect. FM would still cut out. FM and ipod still cut out when reconnected.

At some point the OBC info (date, limit, speed, etc) stopped displaying in the CCD on the instrument cluster. No response to the BC button on the stalk. The OBC is fine because all of that info displays on the Nav screen.

last weekend I checked all the radio fuses I could find (glove box and battery compartment). Removed and re-seated them, they seemed fine. I removed and re-seated all of the other connectors to the radio and the amplifier. None seemed particularly bad (no signs of corrosion or breaks). I disconnected the battery leads and touched them together, and let everything sit disconnected for a half hour. None of this helped.

Did the "ignition switch test" with the passenger visor and mirror. Did not do anything weird.

Took it to the dealer this week. He found a fuse for the alarm that had fallen out, and replaced it. Now the alarm beeps. He said he could poke around some more to try and find the radio issue, but at $150/hr it was going to get expensive quickly. He said he really would do no more than I could myself with a multimeter and a bentley manual.

Now the ipod and fm are gone altogether. The nav screen shows the AM station and the FM station along with all the RDS info, track title etc for FM, so it is getting signal, but there is no sound. Also the Nav/screen and cockpit controls no longer talk to the ipod at all. No track info on the screen, no effect from the forward/reverse track etc.

Any advice? Should I swap out the radio in the trunk? the amp?

Thanks

It sounds like you have some sort of radio tuner(since it is NAV vehicle) and/or amplifier. Unfortunately it is hard to diagnose something like this and need to get in the vehicle and figure out what the issue is. Could be wiring. Could be radio tuner. Could be amp. Hard to say.

Thanks for the response. I have a new radio & head unit on the way. I will post what the final solution is, and of course a FS post on what i don't use.

Thanks

The problem was with the radio itself (the "silver box" in the trunk, not the head unit in the dash). Swapped in a used one and everything is fine now.

A big thank you to Bavarian Auto Recycling for the radio.

Dice Silverline - 2007 x3 installation failed

Hi,

Frustrating experience installing Dice Silverline on 2007 x3 business CD.

I ordered a Dice Silverline from BSW and received it today. Installed it to the center armrest console following the guides from BSW web site, the youtube videos and the others' posts.

After turning the power on, I found that the airbag lights were continuously on. DSC and DTC were off and couldnít be turned on.

The IPod was charging and audio was playing fine initially, controls from the center console and steering wheel buttons seemed work properly. However, music stopped about 10 minutes into testing and CDC mode was missing. I tried to disconnect the Dice kid power and reconnect, but I could only get it back once in several tries. Once I got Dice back, it went missing after a while again.

The indicator lights are really concerning me. The airbag lights went off after I detached Dice from the CDC connectors. The DSC and DTC deactivate indicator is still on however (the yellow indicator with a circle around a 4x4 sight). I tried to press DTC button to turn back on DSC and DTC, it didnít seem to work.

Now I am wondering if I just had the worst luck or if there is anyone experiencing the same problem. One thing I noticed though, the Dice 6 pin connector only has needle pins in it. Is this normal?

Any advice? Malfunctioned parts? Wrong firmware? Or the car is the issue?

Thanks!
