BMW Doubles Sales in China
Looks like BMWs growing investment in the Chinese market is starting to pay off!
In the first quarter of 2010, BMW’s sales in China’s mainland, Hong Kong and Taiwan doubled from a year earlier to 36,579 cars, according to media reports. This figure includes sales from its core brand BMW and its urban Mini cars. BMW’s biggest rivals in China’s luxury car segment are Audi and Mercedes-Benz. In the first three months of 2010, Audi sold 51,449 cars in China’s mainland and Hong Kong, a 77% increase, and Mercedes-Benz’s sales was up 105%, having sold 24,100 units. In 2009, BMW sold 90,536 cars in China, a 38% rise. This makes China its BMW’s third largest market, after Germany and the US. BMW expects that sales in China for 2010 would rise by over 10% to surpass the 100,000 mark. BMW is pouring in a 600 million euro investment in the country to expand the capacity of BMW Brilliance to 300,000 vehicles. Currently, this facility located in the northeastern city of Shenyang has a capacity of 41,000 vehicles. At the China venture’s new factory, the BMW X1 SUV and other models will be produced.
