Proximity Sensors?

This could turn out to be a "What, you didn't know that??" question, or a "Wow, your car is not supposed to do that..." question but... do the 6'ers have proximity detection built into the alarm (or some other) system?

I've noticed a few times in the garage and in parking lots that when I walk very close to the car I hear a click and a mechanical buzz as if some module kicked on. I thought maybe it had something to do with my key being detected until today when my girlfriend just came in the house asking me why my car "swore at her" when she walked by... and by that she meant she heard the same sound when she was taking out the trash. This threw my key theory out the window since it's currently in my pocket.

Is there some feature that I was just not aware of and will now have to go post in the "things you didn't know until AFTER you bought your car" thread? Or is my car possessed?

it has an interior sensor but don't know if it extends to outside the car... page 36 of online manual...

when you lock with the key fob... one press turns the alarm on with sensors... clicking again turns off the sensor...

I forgot about this and grabbed my bag from the front seat of my vert while it was parked top down... that alarm left me deaf for a half an hour since it was in a closed garage...

there's also a tilt sensor that I know worked when i changed my rims and the alarm went off...

Well I'm glad I have a random strange issue to chalk up... so far I was kinda feeling left out without a strange electrical gremlin to talk about.

Too funny.

I have had the occasional day where I'm detailing my car in the garage with the top down and the car seems to keep locking itself (even made sure I wasn't leaning on the key fob, etc)...

She has a mind of her own sometimes.

This could be a user setting in the I-Drive. If you unlock the car but DON'T open a door, the car will relock itself.

I'll see. That's exactly the situation - working on interior detailing so the top's down, but obviously don't want the motion sensors going off.

I'll check. Thanks!

The sound mine makes is the mechanical click and buzz that the car makes when you either unlock doors, or if they are already unlocked, when you just open the door after the car has been sitting a while. Not sure exactly what that noise specifically is but that's the one it likes to make randomly.

I believe that it's just the noise it makes before it goes to "sleep mode" . Mine has been doing it since day one so you should'nt worry. It has nothing to do with the alarm or PDC.

I don't know what the click is for sure, but I'm fairly certain the buzz in the fuel pump pressurizing the system, anticipating you're about to fire it up, at least when you unlock the car. I've had the exact same observation you've had, but I always seem to have the key in my pocet, so I've chalked it up to that. I wonder if the PDC might be 'sniffing' all the time, and if you approach the car when unlocked (it might be assuming you're in a safe locked garage) and the sensors see you, they act as though you're about to get in.

Also - does the 6 series have the 'deadbolts' in the doors I've heard of that are designed to keep doors from popping open during accidents? Might that be the click?

If I may say, it seems to me that this one guy was right about the electrical system, or actually a battery. The battery is to small for this car, and it has to be charged from time to time. I've had the same problem (and many others) that the charged battery had fixed. If your car 5+ years "young" - change the battery and keep it plugged up when all possible. My PDC used to not work, top wouldn't close and an "engine malfunction", etc. messages would come up.... untill I've started to charge my battery on regular bases... check other blogs about the battery
