98 740i - Hood release

Can anyone tell me how I can release the passanger side hood release. I have taken out the passanger front grill and noticed that the cable somehow came out of the hood release. Is there a way to manually release it and once done I should be able to figure out what happened to allow the cable to slip out of the latch?
