00 740i - Engine failsafe program

I drove my 2000 BMW 740i from the movies 5 miles away from home. Once I got home the "ENGINE FAILSAFE PROG" showed up one the display. The car will start with no problems once I drove it half of block it started shaking and turning off at low speeds. The car will restart with out any issues but wil drive fine after a few minutes and then the problem will return, it feels like the car wants to go but will not go to normal speed. The temperature is normal. Please help.

It is a 2000 BMW 740i with the sport package
JJ

This happened to me and it ended up being the alternator.

Usually means you have a problem with your electronic throttle. Do a search (check the E39 forum too) for EML light.

I ended up replacing two coils to fix the failsafe in my car.

I finally had a mechanic pulled teh codes for free and this is what we have:
140 - Electronic Thermostat Control
62- Misfire Several Cylinders
52 - Misfire Cylinder # 4
164 - Barometric Pressure sensor

Not sure on what else to do and the last thing I want is to take it to the delear.

Mein Auto: 2000 X5
My 2000 X5 is displaying the "Engine Failsafe Program" on the dash every 10-30 miles!
When this happens, the engine seems to run idle for a moment, in which it looses all power for 1 second or 2.
The RPM and speed gauges drop to zero, then recover, as soon as I hit the gas again.

It was very scary the first time this happened on the highway at 70 mph. It seemed as though the motor had turned off while driving!
So I slowly pulled over to the side of the road and restarted. It restarts like normal every time.

I can keep driving with no loss in performance. The display goes away again after 5 seconds!
No other lights are displayed and no service engine light comes on.

My BMW mechanic and computer diagnostics couldn't find anything!

He said it might have something to do with the electronic throttle, but it could be 100 other things.
Said I should keep driving it until service engine lights do come on and then have it checked out again.
He thinks it's definitely an electrical issue and not a mechanical one and you can't make it worse by driving.

Maybe it will go away again by itself... read another post where this was the case!
Will keep you posted on what happens.

Corinna

Smile Engine fail safe light

My 1995 730I e38 failed to start one day and I used my snap on scanner to check it out and it said ecu fault ? and I cleared the code and it started ?, the next day when it was semi warm it started badly and the auto box went into limp home, I drove for half a mile then swtched off and re started and all was ok until the next when I went through the above scenarious again. I replced both of the temperature sensors at the rear of the engine and scanned for fault codes again and it then said temp sender unit failure but not which one of the two, I cleared the fault codes and bingo three years later still perfect.
