Another artists renderings of BMW MegaCity Vehicle
The lack of any real news from BMW about the Project MegaCity and Project i hasn't stopped everyone from speculating, rehashing or stretching the details of what we do know about MegaCity/Project i. If your not familiar the two projects from BMW fall into a growing category of 'city cars', basically short range, electric or hybrid cars that are designed to take you around the city. They are the carry all work horse you SUV is, but they don't guzzle gas either. Styling and some BMW technology aside think of the MegaCity projects as electric/hybrid Smart cars that will be cool, or at least that it the theory.
Below is AutoBild's take on what the MegaCity is going to look like. Shown in a 2 door 4 seater the hybrid version will be powered by a 3 cylinder, 500cc per cylinder engine that comes out of BMWs new unified engine design concept but will only kick in when you floor it to race a gas powered Smart car, or 92 Civic. The rest of the time the MegaCity will be zipped around by a motor and battery combo that can be recharged by the motor or plugged in. The car will also be available as a full electric for those that really don't drive. Both the hybrid and the full electric will have high tech carbon fiber parts coming from BMW's new Washington State based carbon fiber production facility. The combination of carbon fiber, aluminum and other weight saving design features will help extend the range or reduce the carbon foot print of the hybrid. What do you think? If BMW brings this 'city car' to the states would you buy one? |
