Help - Strange noise from behind glove box

Hello,

I have a 2008 328xi with approximately 32,000 miles. Occasionally I hear a noise coming from behind the glove box. It sounds like a quiet fan or whirring. It seems to be intermittent, but is beginning to occur more often. It stops as soon as I turn off the car and doesn't change with speed, heating/cooling fan, radio etc.

It's starting to drive me nuts. Any suggestions would be welcome!

Thanks!

I had a very similar problem in my last vehicle (an Acura TSX). Turned out that the blower motor for the HVAC lived back there.

Could be the fan for the ambient air temp sensor that would be my guess.

You know what, I have noticed it too on my 2010 323i. I have had it for a month and just began noticing it yesterday. I will be taking it into service soon for a few other things. Let me know if you ever find out what it is.

This is what happen:

The dealers had a look at the problem with the noise behind the glovebox.

The technician said it could be a pipe which is run by a pump and this resonates creating a frequency which further down the pipe can be heard in the cabin of the car.

They ordered some parts and scheduled the car in for 2 days.

The car has been with them for 2 days now and the dealer called to say that the problem has been fixed.

I presume it is the pipe but will report if different when I get my car back.

I have the same noise occasionally as well. Definitely sounds like a fan but didn't see what it could be so I will also be interested in the "solution" once you know. DG.
