What would happen if you press "P" while moving?

I have often thought that it would be easy to press the P while in motion by mistake. The manual says not to do this. But it seems like a likely occurrence since the driver is encouraged to handle the shift (DS mode, manual mode) while the vehicle is in motion. Does anyone know what would happen?

Another interesting point in the manual is that the tranny automatically shifts to Park if you undo the driver's seat belt and open the driver's door with the engine running in reverse or drive. Not sure what is going on there.

If you hit the P while moving slowly (parking speeds) its jams the tranny into P with a big jerk - I did this once by mistake. Never pressed P at high speeds though but I would imagine nothing would happen.

P

You get propelled out of the car doing Mach 10 with airbags deploying a little late....I thought of this as well and have to believe that nothing would happen. I find it hard to believe that if my wife was driving on the highway with kids in the back and accidentally hits the "P" button that the car would slam into park. Seems like the government along with Edmunds would be all over that one.

I am pretty sure I hit the "P" accidentally while driving one day and didn't even know it. I saw a warning on screen so I'm not precisely sure if I hit it but it was like one of those warnings when you shift and don't press the side button first (a practice that I now do for everything whether I need to or not now). What I was doing was resting my arm on the shifter while increasing the volume on the radio. I'm not exactly ready to try it again to see but I'm certain that the system would have the smarts to not lock up the transmission and launch you out the window

P.S. I was driving at normal speeds and not slowly.

Should be the same thing that happens if you were to yank a hand parking break up at full speed...

Same as Santo. Traveling on the freeway, I accidentally depressed the P while adjusting the radio or climate. Got the "don't do that, stupid" message. That's all.

I too had experienced the low speed jerk into park described by paspar2 above. It was unnerving and made me wonder what would happen at high speed. If nothing actually happens at higher speed other than a warning I wonder what the cut off speed is?
