Sorry for the delay in updates: guess I am superstitious, was getting close to bringing everything to closure, and did not want to "jinx" it.

Vehicle is officially totaled. Insurance company was great to work with, have been made totally whole, and have ordered a 2011 X5D configured exactly the same as the vehicle that was wrecked. And no additional money out of my pocket.

I very much appreciate all the help here on Bimmerfest, and a extra thank you to ARD who does some pretty good coaching. Advice well taken.

Now I wait again. Have a production number, but no start date....so maybe if I am lucky, 4-5 weeks, with the rental car. Wife won't give me her 535 to drive. She says I have to drive the Enterprise special. But, hey, it beats walking.

Thanks again.

Glad it worked out! And look at it this way, you are also getting the LCI this time, so it is kind of an upgrade.

tw, great news! BTW did they ever pin down the actual cause of the fire? It would be interesting to know exactly what part failed and caused the damage. It sounds like the insurance company settled with you and will probably collect from BMW is that right? Did you get a loaner until the new car comes in or a rental paid for by the insurance co.?

Guys, I hate to be the party pooper, but the problem of buying a 70,000 dollar car is that you have to do a lot of damage before they write it off.
including buying a new body and building over the OK parts, and just replacing the damaged ones.

At he end of the day, it's still been in a crash, and will depreciate, and you will loose fist fulls of money on it.

But hey, it's only money, you can earn some more. at least you and your wife are OK !

hope for you that they do total it. Keep us informed

First rule of posting: read the entire thread.

(OK, maybe second rule...first being 'do a search')

Oopps yeh, but it worked out good for him.
so his smashed car was 2010, and now they are buying him a 2011 ? that's good !!!
Wonder if he will get the luggage blind ? maybe he should try to keep the one from the smashed car just in case BMW really have now made that an option

Actually I recommended that to him as well! But the tow operator had thrown parts into the back, damaging the blind.

Since OP is getting the diesel, as I recall it still comes with the blind...

....and I was also going to try and salvage the all weather mats, and cargo area mat,
but....as the pictures show.....lots of "stuff" all over them.

Simpler just to start with new ones..........

Airbags didn't deploy??!!!! What the heck? Your car looks like it is completely mangled...I think I would send those pics to the DOT to make sure nothing is wrong here. Obviously very glad to hear you're ok, but that's why we have airbags--at least the curtain air bags should have deployed on a side collision. I was going to joke that the damage should just buff right out, but the comment about the airbags is very worrisome--that's my biggest concern with kids is how safe a car is...

As mentioned in first post......a guy in a pickup truck crossed the double yellow......I got off the road, but he had lost control, and hit us in a frontal offset (left front), then went right down the side.

Airbags? Once the vehicle was at the dealers collision center, I was asking the techs why they thought the airbags did not deploy. They started looking and found the sensor from the left side, laying in the debris, and it looked as though the wiring had been sheared during impact. Is that why they did not deploy? Was it angle of impact? I dont know the answers to any of that, and can only share what I found. I am still convinced the BMW kept us from serious injury. The passenger compartment was intact.
