2011 550i opinions please

Hello all,
I received a packet in the mail yesterday from BMW on the new 5. Nice brochure with a website to go to and investigate and learn about the new 5. Pictures were nice but I wanted to see one in person.
This morning on my way into the Hospital, I stopped at my local BMW Center and looked at a 550i and a 550iGT. I was not impressed with the styling at all. What is with the front end? I realize that they had to re-design it to make it more pedestrian friendly, but man oh man it is ugly!
The rear view was a little better. The side profile with that bulbuous nose is awful. I though I would never say this but BMW needs Bangle back. I really feel the E60 body flows a lot better than the new 5.
The interior is gorgeous though. I really like the dash and console and there is now a temp gauge in the dash.
It is time for me to make a decision to either go with an extended warranty on the 07 530i or look for a new car. The new 5 has turned me off!
Looking forward to other opinions, in agreement or disagreement!

Some have argued it's a bit more conservative than they anticipated. I agreed a bit with you on the front end at first, but it's grown on me. Overall, I think it's beautiful and stunning. Ordered yesterday the following - due to arrive August.

It's much better looking in person than in photos.

I also order mine yesterday and obviously it is very subjective but I think the exterior is handsome and conservative. The interior, at least for me is much better than the previous model. It looks more luxurious and the lines really flow well together.

I am very happy with the overall package!

Compared to the Gran Coupe, it's a snoozer. But that's deliberate. They made the sedan more conservative, and the Coupe more aggressive, to cover a wider spectrum of buyers IMO.

Picked up my 550i this past Sat. Even with the run-flats it's smooth and I do not like the run flat ride. I always run in Sport mode (Dynamic Handling) and it's sweet. Still don't care for the huge gap above the wheels, but I'm gonna live with that. It's an electronic marvel on the inside. The iDrive is much improved with all the right fixes. These are all the improvements I would've wanted on my 08 550i. Handling is great and they finally made the sunroof the way a $70K car should have a sunroof. One shouldn't have to pull the sunroof back....There are a lotta little improvements you won't notice in the showroom or one test drive.

I like it. It reminds me of the latest BMW Z4 as far as the front goes.

If you don't like it wait a year. I suspect that once again the Lexus GS will be the beauty in this class of cars. Certainly not the E550, the A6 the M56S. But right now, I think the 550i is the clear winner.

Disagree, but only because of the hood. I was very surprised - didn't like the hood at all, although I expected to.

Well, I went to my dealer today to take a first hand look at the new 5. Oh my goodness. I hate to be cliche and say that the pictures don't do it justice....but the pictures don't do it justice. Gorgeous lines, the proportions are almost perfect and the fit and finish just superb. I was concerned about how the front gill would look, but not anymore after seeing it in the flesh. It makes my E60 look and feel really old. Can't wait to test drive next week. Beautiful, beautiful car.

Also test-drove on Saturday and plan to order once the X-drive version begins production. FYI, the tailpipes on the one i drove were rectangular, not the same as the stock photo, similar to the 7-series. Just a small detail, i saw the Euro version in Munich recently and it had the round/oval ones, bit cleaner of a look.

Test drove both the 535 and the 550 today for my wife's next car. The F10 is awesome. Loved it loved it loved it!

The 535 was quite a bit more peppy than I expected, as I drive an E60 550i right now so I'm used to lots of V8 power.

The 550 F10 was pretty well loaded with features, and was IMO a lot more fun to drive than the 535. Wifey loved it 550 better, too, but doesn't think she'll need all those ponies under the hood or the performance, so she's going to order the 535.

Gotta admit, though: I perceived that my E60 accelerates faster than the F10 with its twin turbos. I could be mistaken, since we drove our minivan to the test drive instead of my car, but after driving my '08 E60 for two years now I'm pretty dialed in to what I should expect, and I didn't have quite as big a grin on my face getting on the F10 as I expected.

Not complaining one bit, though. I'd take an F10 in a heartbeat.

The test drive did settle one dillemma for me though: my E60 lease is up next year. I wasn't sure if I'd purchase my car or jump to the F10 when the lease is up. Now I know - I'm going to keep my E60. I friggin' love that car, it's got exactly what I want on it, and it doesn't dissapoint in any way. I don't feel any need to rush out of it and onto "the next better thing."

Besides, the wife's gonna have her F10 parked next to mine in the garage, so I get the best of both worlds.

I drove the 550 today and I agree...*loved it*.I'm still collecting my thoughts but all I can say is...1) I was, much to my surprise, more impressed by the 550 that I was by the 750Li I also drove today (go figure)...2)when they offer a diesel version which,I'm told, will happen within the next two years,I'm there with my checkbook and my current "d".

Drove both the 535 and 550 the other day. Some initial thoughts that need refinement....The 550 felt a little heavy upfront. Also, I didn't immediately appreciate the power of the V8. My initial impression is that in everyday driving the 535 has more than enough spunk and would be more fun to drive because of its lighter weight and better balance. But I need to go back and drive both again. The 550 had ZDH - unless I'm in a highway chase or tearing around a winding country road, which I don't do very often, I'm not sure this option is necessary for me - maybe the sport package w/ spt auto trans would suffice. Both models felt "large" compared to my E60 and I had some trouble getting used to looking over the F10's longer, bulbous hood - obstructed my visibility. Probably just need to get adjusted to the car. The fit and finish and overall look inside and out was outstanding. Love the tail pipes on the 550 - too bad the 535 wasn't so equipped.

Had similar opinion of 550i on the power. The 550i I drove had 2VH (IAS) along with ZDH, and it handled better around high speed curves than a 535i with just ZDH and no 2VH despite being heavier. So, a lighter 535i with ZDH and 2VH makes an interesting combo for cornering/handling. Same opinion on the hood and tailpipes. -Magic
