odd starting problem

So i got in my car earlier this morning and when i first tried to start her up, the car turned over several times but didnt fire up, followed by banging sounds (several), and then i stopped it. on my second try the car started right up.

i should also add that when it wasnt turning over on the first try, i tried giving it some gas, so when the car started up on the second try there was a plume of smoke behind the car (couldn't tell if it was blue, white, or gray really). so i dont know if that was smoke due to a bad ccv or just smoke because of all the fuel in the engine from me pressing the gas being burnt off really rich. the smoke went away within 1-2 seconds.

i got the starter replaced two months ago on the car so i dont know if that could have been defective? also could this be the cps? i know the cps will give me starting problems but how about the banging sounds?

as far as codes, i do need to change my cps (guilty..) and o2 sensors. il get to those soon... but would a bad cps cause the banging sounds? T_T

the banging and smoking concern me. have you checked your oil and coolant levels recently?

ya, checked all levels right before starting the car (i check it every three days). coolant and oil is right where its supposed to be, and the steering fluid was low so i topped that up (got a leak on the high pressure hose). and ya, the banging and smoking really scared me. it kinda sounded like as if the starter's solenoid hit the flywheel or something. (seen a car where that happened and thats how it sounded). but that wouldnt explain the smoke. normally there is no smoke.
