X5 hatch release mechanism stuck open - HELP

My 2004 X5 hatch release is stuck open and nothing seems to reset it. We've opened and closed the door, cycled the key on and off, pushed all the buttons and nothing seems to work.

Any suggestions so we can get the truck home?
