Adaptive drive option

Getting ready to order 2011 X5 D. Can anyone comment on the value of the Adaptive Drive option listed under the Sports Activity Package. I am sure there is value to it, but is it a must have item?

I had them on my 07 3.0 and love them. I could not justify the high cost on my new one (on order).

I passed on that option. It's suppose to reduce roll, and give you a sportier suspension afaik. I really don't notice much roll taking turns at 40-50mph, and I take exit ramps at 60mph+...the suspension is stiff enough imo too.

I believe it's a priority 1 option, so I don't think any dealers will have this on test drive X5's on their lots. Have you test driven the 2011 X5 yet?

I think if you get the X5, and you can't sleep at night without thinking, "what am I missing without the adaptive drive???", then go ahead and get it.

I did drive an X5 without adaptive drive and was really happy with it. Thats why I have been on the fence about ordering it-especially given the high premium for it's addition.

Check out this thread, opionions from people that have Adaptive Drive.

http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=438712

Are you buying or leasing? Look at the cost of the addition this way, it'll increase your monthly payment by like $10 over 5 years. $10/month worth a nicer ride (from the perspective of people who have it) and so you can sleep easier at night without double guessing yourself?

Just got my 2011 5.0 with sport Pkg 20"and no Adaptive drive option. The ride / feel / grip / comfort is excellent and far improvment over my old 2001 4.4 with sport PKG., in my opinion save $$$$ or spend $$$$ on other options instead (Premium Sound, HUD, upgraded seats to name a few).

$3500 for a little less body roll was not in the cards for our 35d purchase, but it should be noted we don't take 25mph off ramps at highway speeds either!

If you haven't had it before you might not miss it and it is an expensive option. I splurged for it since I loved it on my previous 5 series and wanted to keep as much of the sports car feel as possible when going to the X5.

Okay, thank you for the input. Put my order in for 2011 X5 D in AW/Cinn Brown with Premium, Tech, Sport Activity plus Multi-Contour seats, Cold Weather, Rear Climate, Premium Sound, Running Boards, Roof Rails. NO ADAPTIVE DRIVE. Made sense to get other goodies, and my wife will be primary driver and she said she will not appreciate. I will most definitely steal her new car every chance I get. Thanks again for helping us decide.

I would have done it if it offered the 4 modes that the 5/7 series offer - mainly *comfort*.

For anyone still wondeing if this is something worth while for them, here's a video on x5 Adaptive Drive and how it works and effects the drive/ride. I agree, would like it integrated with settings like new 5/7.

Cool video, thanks for posting.

I had a 1990 Infiniti Q45 with adaptive drive. yes, 20 years ago. I'd read that they could actually program all the body roll out of the suspension- only issue was you'd ultimately 'peel off' the road when the tires reached the adhesion limit without really any warning!

I have it on the X5- is it essential? Of course not. I figured by taking out the HUD, ventilated seats and Comfort access, I could add in the suspension and enjoy it with every single turn.

It may not be essential, but it is a thrill. Pre-MY2010 Adaptive Drive was part of the $3600 sports package. Now, as a stand-alone option it is $3500 and the remainder of the sports package is an additional $2200. This price increase has lead many to pass on this very cool option.

Because I was going from a car (535i) to an SUV due to wife's orders (plus new baby), I wanted to get the SAV as close as possible to a sports car. With the adaptive drive (and sport package), I really don't miss the car.

Indeed. I had ordered a 2009 and turned down delivery when it arrived, as BMW had announced the ECO credit was extended to 2010s.... the reality was that the 're-jigegring' of the sport package led to a hidden price increase of 2200. (ie sport was 3700 and included adaptive in 2009...in 2010 it was separate so you had to pay 3700 for the drive PLUS 2200 for the sport, or 5900 combined.)

I went for it, but sure didn't enjoy that!

Ad is fantastic, its the vital differentiator for me of my x5d vs my GL320cdi. I'm sure BMW's generally handle better but w AD in the x5d its like driving a porsche sportscar[say it aint so] -- please excuse that reference but i only have 335d experience

Before ordering my '11 35d, I drove three '10s. One with (a 30 w/MSport), and two without (a 30d and 30i, both +Sport). I could tell the difference especially when driving fast on our preferred test route (for those in Austin, Spicewood Springs on the West side of 360 heading East -- its close to the dealer). We've always used that course and they may be recommending it now. However, there are some places where you can drive the car off the road and into the water there, so I'm not so sure...

The one with AD had much less body roll and seemed to stick to the ground a whole lot better. I thought it was much more fun to drive. My passenger was even able to tell the difference (perhaps she didn't have to "grab the 'oh sh*t' handle" as often with the AD -- heh).

After that experience, I found that it was worth the extra $$ to me, so I added the AD to mine. However, I'm a very aggressive driver (perhaps that is why I'm getting 'bad' mileage?). Those who are 'less than aggressive' drivers may never notice the difference with/without the AD. But if you like taking corners, flying ramps, twisty roads, (ok, and quick lane changes) at high speed, you'll probably appreciate the AD.

All of the 35d's at the PC have AD; it was SO cool doing the slalolm cones at 70 with that X5 + AD!

I wish they have the Sport package option like the X6 for $4600 which includes Adaptive Drive. The X5 only has the Sports Activity Package without Adaptive

Can you imagine the confusion 4-5 years from now in the used market with "Adaptive Drive" and sport package?!?! 08-09 if it has sport it has adaptive, but 10-11 you can have sport with or without adaptive..... or worse, the whole side view camera issue... "is it an Oct '10 build date?"

I also didn't opt for the adaptive drive on the x5 since my wife will be the primary driver of the car and she wont ever use that feature driving on the streets. As for me, I have my M

We drove the X5d's at the PCD and the adaptive drive was noticeable - but I don't know that I'd actually be able to use it for the most part since I only drive highway..

it would likely promote more "spirited" driving though
