What about using the trim piece that Bavauto sells for 21.95? They say it fits the 2011.

So after reading through all of those post I cannot find what anyone paid for the 2011 hitch installed.

Also can't discern from the post how to tell the difference between and 2010 and a 2011 hitch.

Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks

The price range can be as low as $605.00 from PCD or as high as $1500.00 from dealer. As of now many believe that the 2010 hitch will work with (not available yet) 2011 trim piece for the cut out of the lower middle bumper area to fit the hitch. I was going to do the pick up in S.C. to get the lower price and enjoy the day with BMW but it was not available on June 23rd.

If you and you dad would consider doing the PCD in S.C. AND the hitches are in stock you guys would have a REALLY fun day with BMW and save about $500.00 on each hitch.

It's 15 minutes from his house (he lives on exit 54 and BMW is on exit 60). I've been there a few times for delivery and events.

Why are you saying the hitch would be $500.00 less there?

You can search this forum under "trailer hitches" and will find where customers doing the PCD only paid between $607.00 to $715.00 for the hitch installed at the center. BMW will not put the hitch on at the factory but will do it at the PCD center. The dealers wants twice as much or more for the same service and they get their training from the folks in S.C. as I have read. The hitch alone sells for about $450.00 so the deal is at PCD. I had planned a pick up their until I was told the hitches were back ordered at the time of my scheduled pick up date so I cancelled and still do not have a hitch.

'11 Hitch cost

In answer to the question regarding the cost of the hitch for the '11 model, I have two quotes from BMW dealers in St. Louis. The first quoted $1,200 and the second said $1,200, but in the same sentence said they would discount it to $1,000. My enthusiasm for installing a hitch just cooled a bit. Since I only use it to haul bikes, a roof carrier is suddenly sounding better!
Anyone ever use U Haul? I see a lot of cars on the road with a UHaul branded hitch. Checked with an installation center and was told that their hitch venders do not yet have the X5 '11 version but could do a custom fabrication/install for $1,000. The '10 model is $245 plus installation which would not be more than $150. I would prefer to stay OEM, but a $600 savings in tempting assuming that the '11 hitch, when it is available, is at the same cost as the '10. Any thoughts?

BMW, and especially the dealers need to dig a LOT deeper.

As posted elsewhere in X5 Forum, I picked up X5d end of July & dealer installed hitch a week later. (Paid $1,000 installed. Part price I heard was a few cents more.) After checking while hooked up to trailer. everything, including brake controller worked EXCEPT the trailer brake lights. Directionals use same filament.

I checked trailer circuit & all is fine. I set up appointment for 10 am yesterday for a "software update." Guess what? Dealer (Reeves in Tampa) couldn't do it at arranged time. SO, I left the truck there & took a loaner (POS Nissan with 47,000 miles on it. Real high-class. Just like a BMW isn't it?) but they weren't able to figure it out yesterday. So, today I called a few times & they were still in a quandry. SA just called & they are installing a new hitch module tomorrow.

My wife says I should have bought an ML 350d. Most of them come with hitches.

It is obvious that BMW is no further ahead with dealing with hitches now than they were in 2004 when I bought my X3 & had to install a 1971 Chevy truck stop-light switch on the firewall to activate the trailer brake controller with wiring running all over the floor.

PLUS, now at 2500 miles on X5d I checked fuel consumption on causeway between here & Tampa (flat as a board). At 60 mph, only 27.3 mpg. Only time I can see 30 that some claim is when coasting. While better than my old X3, not very good.

Not a happy camper.

Vintage - I've been in ongoing discussions with BMW USA customer care or whatever. They've been working with my dealer on a fix, but there still doesn't seem to be any end in sight. I've had them follow some of the leads I've gotten here, but unfortunately, nothing yet. I'm getting worried as O'Fest is only three weeks away. I bought the thing explicitly for towing...

How is it that some (1, 2 or 3, as I recall) have gotten them programmed?!? Someone reported that a BMW regional rep did it... seems that this should be (1) cannot be done for any car, or (b) can work in any car.... irrespective of an "official" release.

Agree completely. I mentioned the regional rep bit to the BMW CS person and she sort of kind of acknowledged it. I'm getting the feeling that this is not a BMW approved method, but I don't know for certain. There's a serious disconnect here, but I'm hoping to be the squeaky wheel, so to speak.

Frustrating isn't it?

I just called my dealer to check on progress. Once I hear back, I'm going to call some of the BMW NA execs I know in Montvale & rant a bit.

Lack of Communication

I just received a call from my SA. They have not been able to get all signals to work. They are trying to blame my brake controller. It's a standard unit that I used on my X3. It cost all of about $79. And, the BMW controller is c. $400. That's why I didn't buy one with the hitch. But, I MAY have to in any case.

But, here's the worst part: He tells me he found a Service Bulletin dated July 2 or there abouts saying that trailer hitches for X5s built after April 2010 (2011s) are in short supply and the programming is still being developed. So, do not install hitches on the after April 2010 trucks.

As of today, they don't know WHEN or IF the programming will be done. So, I'm without the X5 since Wednesday & won't get it back until Monday. Last time I buy from a dealer like Reeves who is an hour away in Tampa. If my local dealer (Ferman in Palm Harbor) had had the right color & diesel combos, I would have bought here. They are walking distance in a pinch. And, I know the sales and service guys, having had 2 BMWs from there.

I contacted some friends at BMW NA. They are investigating problem from that end. Let's see where it goes.

As of now I have a truck that is useless to me as I can't tow with it. And, am stuck with a Nissan loaner car for the weekend.

2011 X5 hitch

If anyone has any names or phone numbers of BMW NA execs I would like to call: I think they need to hear from a LOT of people. We should all get compensation for false advertising. I planned to be able to tow with my X5 advertised as being able to tow 6600 lbs. Anyone have a phone # or email address? I have been unable to find a good email to use.

craiggerry:

I have names & numbers & some emails. But, let's wait until next week.

I spoke to one of my contacts there this afternoon & he said he will look into it early next week knowing I'll only be around Monday & Tuesday. I leave for Monterey Wednesday early.

I too feel we were misled. Had I known about this situation, I would have purchased the Mercedes. My local dealer had what I wanted except for the interior at a competitive price. And, the Merc dealer (Lokey) staff are great people - like the people at my local BMW dealer, Ferman.

ML only comes with light beige (we have that in the E & I would get that filthy in just a couple of race weekends), gray (boring Had it in X3), & black (like a tomb). But, the ML had a trailer hitch installed at the factory. (My wife is now busting my chops about buying the X5 instead. "See. I told you so.") But, I bought the X5d with Cinnamon Brown/black interior (very striking) & it won't show the dirt like beige.

Let's see what my BMW NA friends can discover.

Great--can certainly wait a bit. I also looked at MB GL but liked driving the X5 better. The X5 has to be a rare deal --an SUV without a factory hitch. Even rarer that the dealer cannot install one!

All Range Rover Sports come standard with factory installed hitches as well. They're optional on the Cayenne, ML, FX and just about every other SUV I can think of. I'm not sure why BMW has taken the "dealer-installed" approach on these....

Because they would then be subject to a whole raft of testing, labeling, certification and regulatory processes. CVWR, CGVWR, etc, etc, plus testing with trailers, braking systems, cooling, transmission, etc.

Go to any Mercedes store and look at the new & used MLs & GLs. I think you'll find about half have hitches.

The more we develop this discussion, the more I'm going to dig. I think I'll call my contact in Munich in addition to Montvale. I'll keep after them until we get answers and satisfaction. I just wish there were a BMW media event on the horizon where I could button-hole some of the execs about this situation.

I really don't feel it is necessary for us to jury-rig the trucks to make them work correctly. But, I still have the wiring and '71 Chevy pickup truck brake light switch. And, if I have to, I'll install it on the X5 the same way I did on the X3. I'll then share the layout with you all.

X5 hitch 2011 model

I purchased an x5 35d in June (with hitch as part of the purchase) but did not get the hitch installed until last week. Originally told it was on back order but later found out the delay was not due to hardware availability, but because they were late to release the software needed for trailering. Finally got it installed and towed this past week. I pulled a 2000-2500 lb popup camper 250 miles and was impressed at the towing performance. Still managed to get 20 mpg towing.

Do you use a trailer brake controller? Was it operating? Were all lights working? If yes to both, you must be the first. In which case, who is your dealer? Who can the tech at Reeves, Tampa call to learn the right way to do it?

Please answer as soon as possible as I'm about to call them to bring the X5 back to me until they get their act together.

Thanks.

I just heard back from BMW NA this morning...it seems they've thrown their hands up. No fix will be available until September, so they are in the process of arranging for a loaner tow vehicle from my dealer for O'Fest. What a cluster.
