What a difference good diesel fuel

Today I filled my new X5 35d with a tank of 76 Union diesel. WOW! This is the first time since I've owned this vehicle I could not tell it was a diesel. It is so much quieter with very little diesel clank. I presume the cetane level was higher than previous fill-ups. I am surprised at how much smoother it runs as well. Who knew?

In the German owner's manual, it recommends filling up with diesel with a minimum cetane value of 51, which is also the minimum cetane level legislated in the EU.

What is the % of Bio Diesel allowed in the German owner's manual? If I remember my last trip to Germany, spring 2009, all diesel was 20% bio diesel but here in the states BMW limits to 5%, Why?????

EU regulations also limit biodiesel to 5% in normal diesel fuel.

The regulation is DIN EN590 if anyone wishes to search.

I believe that has recently been, or will soon be, increased to 7%

According to www.arb.ca.gov under the diesel fuel section they mandate a cetane level of 53 for automotive diesel fuel. This is higher than the cetane level of 48 I thought it was before. In any case unless there was a bad batch in Carpenteria the OP should not really notice any difference between any diesel purchased in CA IMHO.
