We have a production number, but no build date. My dealer keeps telling me the build will start this week. We were given a production number the day we ordered it, but BMW USA.com and the 800 # are a waste of time.

You are not asking the right question.

You need to ask them if they (the dealership) has an open eary december production allocation that they are giving you!!!

The know exactly how many slots they have each month and how many orders they have awaiting production. This isn't a "we are waiting on BMW" thing... ask them this and THEN see what they say.

I will ask them again but when we placed the order they said they had a spot for us. We rushed to get the order in to ensure a spot. How can I verify they really did have the allocation. I thought a vin or something would give me more confidence but obviously want to hear a production date. Hoping not to be sweating this out all December.

Take the uncertainty out of the equation. Write up the order with a guaranteed del date. If it's late- walk away from the deal with your dep. Or, buy a diesel from dealer stock.

Order's already signed. Wish I had thought of that. Still think it's a good deal without the tax credit but just trying to figure out if it's even going to be a possibility to take delivery in December. Thanks for the input.

What constitutes a delivery?

If your car is going to be a couple of days into Jan, why not complete the paperwork in Dec?

I hear that the cafeteria food in min security prison is quite tasty.

Might be worth a new year's eve getaway to south Carolina but wil probably try to avoid the tax evasion

Any folks in the suburban Philadelphia area been able to get decent deals from our local dealerships?

Best I can find is $1,500 over invoice (less all the various credits). Willing to drive several 100 miles to a PA, NJ, NY, MD dealership for the right price, but am running against the delivery schedule, and need to get something out of inventory before 12/31/10.

I've also tried to get a decent deal through the American Express Auto Purchasing Program, and while they appear to be great deals on paper, cannot get the dealership that's part of that program to respond to the request!

If you've had a great experience, I'd also welcome the name of your Sales Associate.

I know currently there are $3500 ECo credit and $2500 Holiday credit (thru BMW finanace), is the $1800 tax credit another credit?

There is a Federal Tax Credit through 12/31/10 for the purchase of diesel vehicles. For the BMW X5 3.5d, it still is $1,800 to be applied against your 2010 income.

Actually it is a tax credit not a income deduction....


So you just take what tax you owe, and say "$1800 off my tax bill". (Well, turbotax or your accountant does it...)

I don't think we have a finance fee. At least when I asked he didn't tell us we had any fees for financing...

Did anyone else pay that?

Just got a text from the dealer. My X5 went into production this morning!!!

Not sure what you need from the Dealership, but if you go to the link above, it will show you what form (Form 8910) needs to be filled out to submit with your taxes.

X5-D. $3500 eco+$2500 holiday finance (36 mos. @.9%-but can pay off after 5 payments) + invoice + $500 + $170 documents/temp license fee. List $71,000. Paid $59,700. No other dealer in area came within $3000 of this figure. Friend of mine got a similar deal a week later. I just hope I get it before December 31, so I can also get the $1800 rebate. Doc

Do you mean you have the "get the vehicle by 12/31" to get the $1800 tax credit? Even I sign the deal this Saturday, I don't know if I could get the vehicle by EOY.

I had good experience and also very good price (300 over the invoice) for my X5 35D at Open Road BMW in Edison NJ (which is not far from you). The CA was Chad King and his Manager is Stephen (I think). Check them out and see what they offer and then you can ask for a deal close to mine.

The rebate is actually a Fed Tax Credit which you receive by filling out IRS Form 8910 when filing your 2010 taxes. The form does not require a VIN#, only the make/model and the "in use date."

I suppose if you loosely interpret in-use to mean order date (there is no definition on the form), then the credit will apply until such time that you are selected for an Audit.

Even then, it may simply be a matter of showing proof you bought a 35d (the December dated Sales contract as proof perhaps) and hope that the auditor doesn't look closely at the dates. In fairness, there is the letter of the law and the spirit of the law. My feeling is that if your taxes are otherwise clean, and your nice to the auditor, the spirit may prevail.

If you've got other issues, then all bets are off.

Keep in mind, I may be totally wrong here. I'm not a CPA or an IRS auditor.

Let's just hope that we all get our shipments in time!
