m roadster 1998 shifter feels sloppy

hello , i am new to the bmw owners. i bought a 1998 m roadster, i love the car.but the shifter dosent feel like it has a firm positive movement to it.are there bushings that can be replaced? and how hard is it to change shifters? it has 88 k miles , are there any potential problems that usually show up soon?

There are a couple of plastic pieces in the shift lever assembly that can be changed. You can also change the rubber transmission mounts.

If you're going to do all that, I highly recommend Rouge Engineering's Short Shifter Kit, and urethane transmission mounts; I assume they make them for the S52 Z3M.

Replace these two parts and it will not only be like new, it will be NEW.

Its the same transmission for all 6 cylinder Z3s so its all the same stuff.

The RE mounts and stuff are great, and highly recommended, but they won't take out the slop most people complain about. However, I would just buy everything they sell and install the new rubber parts while you are in there.

If you transmission gearshift is not returning to neutral when leaving 5th gear check on this thread. A very common problem. There is a service bulletin on the subject. Requires removal of the transmission to get at the springs and pins. At your mileage, might as well replace the clutch if not done already and check the giubo.
