I have the 2011 X5 35i Premium with all package and option upgrades even with Adaptive drive. I hear that noise only when low speed and low rpm on the driver side front engine. Is this normal or I should take it in for inspection. I contacted the dealer and they said they haven't had anybody complaint about this yet. Please advise what to do? Thanks

First time I hear about it on the 35i. If it annoys you, definitely take it in.. and use all the knowledge accumulated here to fight the technician.

By the way, the dealer just emailed me they are replacing the oil pump tomorrow at noon (that's when the part arrives) and it should be ready by 6pm... that was quick!

Make sure they have the right part number and not replacing with same pump. Most of the new ones have taken over a month to get here from Germany. Not sure if same problem as 7 series and since x s are built in the states

The oil pump has a computer. cool. haha.

It sounds like from the 7 series boards the the pumps were on shore, but in customs.

The X5 maybe assembled here, but the parts are more than likely from one manufacture that makes a bunch of parts for numerous components, as well as, parts for numerous auto companies. It's cheaper to do business like that, but correct me if I am wrong.

They had to order a part .. "Lower oil pan gasket is on back order for 7 more business days from Germany".

I still haven't gotten my car back. Will probably be ready tomorrow or early next week.

I'll keep you posted the moment I get it back!

UPDATE:

This is the two week mark for my repair. Guess they have to drop the sub frame and transmission to have access to the pump. The SA said that no directions have been written for it yet so they are taking pictures to submit to the BMW service manual for future repairs ( my car is now famous).

My tie up has been the gasket, which I told them at first was unique based on others reports from this forum. Of course, they had the old gasket which required another order from Germany.

Luckily I have a nice 535i as a loaner, which has been fun. That thing has some great seats and is a blast to drive. We might look into trading in the 335i for it....

I'll keep you all posted on the results as soon as I get it back.

BTW, try to take the car to a dealer that handles more high-end sales. My local dealer has a large inventory, but it's usually selling lower end models, rather than the 50i's. It seems diagnosis and repair turnaround times are reduced from other owners that take their cars to more "elite" selling dealers, but that is just my observation.

Boy I miss my X5 50i.. it has the M sport package so it rides beautifully. Steering es beautiful!! My 740Li loaner is great, but the engine is boring as hell compared to my X5 50i.

So anyways I still haven't received an update from the dealership. They might still be waiting on the gasket from germany.

Miguel

My car went back in today, couple of weeks ago was told it was alternator, today final confirmation, it was the oil pump. Glad to hear your car is back. If it wasn't for these boards, I may have gone insane from that whinny noise. Thanks all

They'll probably need to order parts from germany, so it might take a while. Good luck!

Sorry for the late update. Finally got the car back on Tuesday. So far the engine sounds like a smooth v8 rather than a golf cart.

Seems like the oil pump was the fix! Hopefully now it stays quiet as the miles accumulate.

ApproachingZero: Do you have a copy of the work order for your repair please?
I had my X5 50i in for diagnosis of the whine today, and they determined that it was the power steering pump that needed to be replaced. The parts are being ordered from Germany. I guess that I am a bit sceptical that this is the correct diagnosis because the whine increases and decreases with engine rpm between 1,000 rpm and 2,000 rpm. This happens whether I am driving or stationary in Park. Since I think that the power steering pump is electric, I don't see why the noise it would make would follow engine speed. If it was a belt driven hydraulic pump it might. But what do I know. Maybe it is the power steering pump after all, I guess that I'll find out.

Just picked my car up as well, the noise is finally gone. It is the oil pump, not the steering.

Parts are as follow.

11-41-7-612-772 oil pump
11-13-7-566-644 gasket steel
11-14-7-570-705 gasket steel
07-12-9-906-905 ASA Bolt

Good luck, my dealership Morristown BMW apologized for the intial delay in making the diagnosis as the North East manager for BMW kept saying it was something else. The dealer was great got car out in one day once the parts from Germany arrived .

Juggler99 I feel your pain! Perhaps this will help. My Dealership has just called me back to say that they have installed the new power steering pump and it has stopped the whine. They are delivering my car now. I should have it back in about an hour and will report back after I have had a chance to drive it myself.
However, I am a bit sceptical that the whine would be caused by an electric power steering pump since the noise tracks engine rpm at low speeds. I hope that I am wrong and that it has somehow stopped the whine.

Speaking of whine, I have been driving around the 328 loaner for the last 3 days, and that thing whines like crazy. Does BMW think that this is OK in what is otherwsie an excellent handling car?

Well I have now driven my X5 and the whine is still there. So the power steering pump install had nothing to do with it, as I suspected.
I had submitted to two different Dealerships, all the details from this forum from other members who have mentioned the engine oil pump as a fix. However, the information I provided them has been met with total indifference and not even a comment. They don't even say " that's interesting, I'll look into it". It's as if they have all been instructed by some higher authority to not comment or show any signs of interest that the oil pump might be the cause of the problem. I am sure that BMW knows about the problem and knows what the fix is, but chooses to "stonewall" us while they make a running change. I guess that they are hoping that we will all give up complaining, or just sell the cars.
I agree with juggler99 that I really like this car, the looks, the performance, but I can't stand the whining. I have never had any other car or truck that sounds like this.
Ultimate driving machine? BMW should be ashamed.

Mecheng1.... That sucks. I am going to do some at the dealership. I will keep you posted on my progress.... This is my 4th BMW, there will not be a 5th unless BMW acknowledges and corrects this issue. It would becoming of them as the company they profess to be if they would fix this for all of us...
