no cars to drive

Local dealer isn't too smart. Got their first X3's in (I assume they were tagged as demo/launch cars) and sold them both instead of ensuring at least one was on hand to drive.

Not sure if they got offered MSRP, but in the first month or so of launch I would have thought BMW smart enough to require the dealers to have ones on hand to test drive that were not to be sold right away. That one sale may cost them 10-20 more in test drives not taken. If BMW's custom order program for this car is so good, they should have found a way to starve a few folks off for a few weeks to just order one?

My wife had an accident in our new S4, and it gave BMW a chance for me to drive an X3 35, but I'm not buying anything without driving it first. Looks like a Q5 or another S4 (depending on what I can find) for me. Anyone know what the lead time is supposed to be for custom order (priority one) on an X3 if they do finally get one today or tomorrow?

I ordered mine about a month ago and it's still listed as " on order."

Yeah, "technically" dealers are not supposed to sell their launch cars until a certain point but it's not easy to BMW NA to monitor that.

Find another dealer? Don't know if that's even feasible for you. You could just get the Audi; the new X3 isn't mind-bogglingly good at anything.

Yeah, if Audi put the S4 engine in the Q5 like they did the Q7 it'd be a no brainer. I'm not sold on BMW's current styling direction. They have taken a step back from the E60 direction with the F10 and this. It just looks so muted. Not much character. IMO Audi is kicking their a** in that regard. I had a Q5 for a few months and loved it. Just wish the bigger engine was available.

If you are looking around, check out the new Turbo 300 hp XC60. Great performance and about the same price as the X3 and Q5. Make sure you get to test the new turbo "R" class as the previous versions were OK but these are great.

Typical short-sighted approach, if you ask me. The dealerships are the "experts" of course, but I agree that this doesn't make much sense: Make a thousand or two now and for the next month or two, nothing to show customers....

That's a shame. We were able to test drive the 2.8 and 3.5 back to back. BTW, if you don't need the extra power don't drive the 3.5 - you wont be able to resist buying it instead of the 2.8...

that is what I was afraid of...I drove the 3.5 last week and am im love...been crunching numbers and wanted to drive the 2.8 to see the comparison but worried about not being able to get the power of the 3.5 out of my mind! big difference, hey? (this coming from driving a Chrysler300 hemi-yeah, different vehicle all together, but get used to that grunt and power which the 3.5 matched easily...ah hell, whats another $50/month...

btw-newbie here..jonsin for my first BMW!!
