E39 (1997 - 2003)
The BMW 5-Series (E39 chassis) was introduced in the United States as a 1997 model year car and lasted until the 2004 when the E60 chassis was released. The United States saw several variations including the 525i, 528i, 530i and 540i. -- View the E39 Wiki |

It would be interesting to post smog emission results for our E39s (for comparison)
It would be interesting to post state smog emission test results for our E39s (for comparison among us).
Who know what we'll learn from this ... I'll start. Below are my emissions test results (long story here) on my 2002 E39. What I learned is that it makes NO difference (for emissions tests) whether you use 87AKI or 91AKI California-specific fuel (actually, the 91AKI results are slightly worse but not statistically so). |

I didn't think I had mine still, but I found it. This was done by the used car dealer I bought from. It was running on fumes when I bought it, and I'm betting it was 87 octane.
Note to Admins-BBCode Tables aren't working! approx 145,000km on a M52TU no VANOS repair.

Interesting.
Comparing only what I can match: -------------------------------------- HYDROCARBONS: at idle: bmw_n00b13: 6 ppm (limit = 150 ppm) 15mph: bluebee: 0 ppm (limit=52, avg=4) 25mph: bmw_n00b13: 5 ppm (limit = 55 ppm) 25mph: bluebee: 0 ppm (limit=36, avg=4) -------------------------------------- Carbon Monoxide: at idle: bmw_n00b13: 0% (limit = 0.70%) 15mph: bluebee: 0% (limit = 0.49%) 25mph: bmw_n00b13: .01% (limit = 0.31%) 25mph: bluebee: 0% (limit = 0.46%) -------------------------------------- Nitrogen Oxides: 25mph: bmw_n00b13: 36 ppm (limit = 408 ppm) 25mph: bluebee: 25 ppm (limit=711, avg=18) -------------------------------------- PS: I don't know how to do tables but this belongs in a tabular format. Looks like few have taken us up on the offer to collect emissions data on our E39s.

It's too bad not many people have posted their smog results as we can learn from the HUGE differences between them (as shown with just 3 results above).
Anyway, California is pretty lenient when it comes to vehicle inspections (compared to places I've lived in the past). Here's the California pseudo-3-part inspection procedure described. - How to Pass the California Emissions Test. 3-Part Test FYI, where I live, the bay area, is an "enhanced smog" area so our cars are driven on a dynamometer while being tested. |

These are very interesting results. Thank you for posting. I updated the previous comparison (post #3) so that all four of us are accounted for (so far).

Is it the oxygen in the exhaust?) - 15mph (2400 rpm): bluebee: 0.0% (no limit provided) - 15mph (1757 rpm): gian: 0.0% (no limit provided) - 25mph (2400 rpm): bluebee: 0.0% (no limit provided) - 25mph (1279 rpm): gian: 0.0% (no limit provided) -------------------------------------- It's interesting that your limits in southern california are a bit lower than mine in the Silicon Valley; yet the averages are the same (duh) and your numbers, for most part, are about the same except for the nitrogen oxides. My nitrogen oxides are a LOT larger than yours; but both of us are an order of magnitude below the limit. |

Inadvertently, we have another "customer" who posted California LA smog test results (from this fuel-injector cleaner thread) which I'll re-use in the figures above.
The point is to compare our E39's and the value will be for others who follow. Another point is to see WHAT things (octane ratings, fuel injector cleaners, etc.) affect smog test results. So far, lower octane improved numbers only slightly (study of 1); and injector cleaner worsened numbers slightly (another study of 1). The first image below is the first test Bugratu took in Los Angeles on his 1997 E39 528i; the second (worse) is AFTER adding: - Bosch 7402 spark plugs - Air Filter - Guaranteed to Pass Smog Test (CRC) fuel injector cleaner Last edited by bluebee; 09-18-2010 at 05:38 PM. |

Looked pretty clean for an 8-year old car with 105k. Hopefully it will turn out to be a good purchase. btw. the oxygen is indeed measured in the exhaust. It is an indication that your O2 sensors are working correctly to create the correct stoichiometric ratio of fuel and air for complete combustion. |

For the record, here is another E36 smog test result.
For some reason, this California emissions report looks different than the other California report (I'm not sure why), but, the information is provided so that others, who come to this thread later, have as much comparison information of like-cars as possible. |

Yes. They fail you if you have ABS malfunctioning (don't ask me how that's related to smog). However there's usually a provision limiting how much you can spend to repair the problem. Look into it.
Bluebee, perhaps the test looks odd because it's not an official inspection?

To wolfman, not only will a SES light (almost?) always fail you (certainly in California), but notice the very first post where there was no check engine light but there was a fault code of P0500 wheel speed sensor - and the vehicle failed. (Note: Even though it says the MIL was lit, it most definitely was not; when I asked, they told me that MIL trigger in the CA smog test goes on for every fault code registered - whether or not your car registers it as a visible SES.)
Yup. I agree. When I asked how a P0500 wheel speed sensor malfunction (which I knew to be a red herring because I had tested the sensors), they told me at the inspection station that you fail in CA for any fault code whatsoever. I find that hard to believe - but certainly you'll fail for a P0500 because I did. I passed simply by clearing the code and driving the car a few miles. Cost me two inspection fees for that learning privilege. ![]() Yea. I see that. They didn't do the 'standard' California test, apparently. |

Hmmmmm... Are you asking tongue-in-cheek 'cuz it's DISA (without the valve) or are you seriously asking what is the thing? I don't know. I'll assume the latter (although I'm open to a correction in terminology anytime, like maybe it's a "DISA flap" but I think Agent99's thread called it a "DISA valve" (I'd have to doublecheck)).
According to the E39 acronyms ******** - BMW E39 glossary of terms, abbreviations, acronyms, slang, and oft-used brand names The word "DISA" stands for: DISA = DIfferenzierte SAuganlage - "Differential Air Intake" And, according to a recent update to that thread (post #68): ... the DISA valve does not change the length of the intake system on the six-cylinder engines from the M52TU onwards - its function is to be open at low speeds, so feeding all six intake pipes together. At mid-range speeds it closes, separating the front and rear groups of three cylinders from each other. At higher speeds it opens again, joining the cylinder groups together. It therefore acts like a massive balance pipe which can be closed when required. The effect of this is to give more mid-range torque without interfering with bottom and top-end torque Just for the record, here's a thread where the DISA valve disintegration is a bad thing (as it ruined an engine!). Here's what the best links has as references: - DISA VALVE FLAP BREAKS: the DIfferenzierte SAuganlage ("Differential Air Intake") valve flap breaks (1), sometimes with parts sucked into the intake manifold (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7) (8) or the disa valve o-ring fails (1) (2) & where to get just the DISA valve o-ring (1) & when the DISA valve flap closes (1) (2) & an example of how this can ruin your engine (1) & how to test DISA operation (1) |

Thanks. Yes serious. I just needed a short answer to understand. Still, thank you.

Found something in the TIS that may be of interest to the thread. I'm also looking for my latest figures... they're here somewhere!
BMW has released nominal emissions values for all their engines. It's on a CD, part number 01 59 0 030 372. Not sure if anyone can get that for us though.

It's not in the TIS, that's where I learned about the CD. I got excited for a bit though, seeing a bulletin on nominal emissions values.
