That's not correct. Just look at the new 550i with its 450 torque, more than the diesel, and yes, you can get it in a manual. The M57 wasn't offered with a manual because they knew there wouldn't be enough demand to justify the cost. Not because of "too much torque".

+1 there a whole lot of engines with far more torque out there that run with manual transmissions. Cost (as stated) is almost certainly the answer.
