There seems to be conflicting info out there on the engines, and I think even BMW USA's website is inaccurate. Per Edmunds Inside Line blog, the F10 528i is now direct injected and with a 12.0:1 compression ratio, vs port-injection and a 10.7:1 CR for the other N52B30 engines. BMW USA says 10.7:1 CR for the 528i, so who's correct?? I think IL has it right and BMWUSA has it wrong on their website. Yes, definitely a different engine. I'm guessing there's a bit more to it than that, and that it's a bit more "uncorked" than the other N52's. It's probably allowing more valve lift via the Valvetronic system than the other '28' and now discontinued '25' trim 3.0L N52s. I basically see the F10 528i as a '530i' in terms of power and performance.
http://blogs.insideline.com/straight...-at-45425.html And yes, the 3-series, especially the manual, is going to be geared much more towards performance than economy. 2000rpm at 80 mph with the ZF 8AT is an incredibly steep overdrive gear. I doubt even the F10's cranked up N52 could pull that gear up a lot of highway grades, especially on a hot day with the A/C running.
