Car won't start (engine problems)

So here's the deal, the car is a 1998 323. Up until this problem happened the car functioned normally. Now when I turn the key, the engine starts to crank but will not start.

I also sprayed some starter fluid into the air intake but nothing happened as a result which leads me to think that there is no spark.

There is no engine code being thrown by the computer.

Check the fuses and relays. You may not be getting fuel

I would just start there because it involves no $$$

Well, for one thing, the battery sounds like it's pretty low. The engine should turn over a LOT faster than that, but that's probably because you've been trying to crank it a bunch of times. Charge the battery.

I think you are on the right track...i.e. no ignition. It should have at least popped a little with starter fluid in the intake. Is there any smell of gas after trying to crank it, like it's getting fuel but not firing? Pull a plug out after trying to crank it and see if there's gas on the plug. You'll be verifying that the fuel pump is working and the injectors are firing. If you have gas on the plug, suspect the cam position sensor. The DME (computer) won't fire the plugs unless it knows where the cam is in it's rotation. Usually it won't fire the injectors, either, but sometimes it will operate one without the other. If no gas on the plug, you'll have to verify the fuel pump is working.

1. check fuses/ relays
2. check plugs, spark
3. check fuel pressure
4. if all these are good, hold you pedal to the floor and start cranking and see if you get sputters or it to start.
5. if it continues to start like that unplug your coolant temp sensor and see if that helps.

That should get you going.

a good way to test to see if your plugs and wires have someone crank the engine while you pull a plug wire and see if it drops cylindar stops firing.
