It is actually incredibly easy:
After removing the top by the four bolts you obviously have done before, remove the top shroud. The side portions are not screwed in - there are two tabs that they lock into, 2 on each piece. One is near the back, one near the front, approximately 2 inches from each end, equidistant from the top and bottom. Essentially, it just pops right out, and with a bit of maneuvering around the other components in the bay, comes out easily. Putting it back is the same - just align, and give it a smack, it will pop right back into place. Ask me how I know: ![]() And my brief thread about it here: http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/sho...864&highlight=

Hey Hossy, with the price of gold the way it is, you do not want to give a crack head any ideas.
. They might think you have a gold plated cover so be careful where you open up the hood. . Seriously though, that is a nice personal touch.

I see someone got rid of the stock intake. What intake is that and how do you like it?

Thanks gents. I tell everyone who sees it that the original mclaren build with gold was my idea. Then again, that is limited to 2 people who see/have ever seen it: my mechanic, and my girlfriend who wondered what the hell I was spending my time on!

Took off the stock airbox. Put the K&N in replacement. (3.5" inlet) Makes a better sound, not much difference in performance really. But for $40 bucks what else could you ask for. Lol. Thanks for the info Hossy! Will paint these black soon!

Very nice. Now I'm going to have to do that this weekend.
What paint did you use? Gloss or matte? Thanks, Wes

Very nice. You said semi gloss. What brand, and how heat resistant is it?

Also - Did you tape off the silver parts (orig plastic), or paint them silver?

Well done NenitoZ! Looks nearly OEM!
3Pedals - I have used the VHT engine metallic spray paint with great success, and it also dries very quickly. I don't know what NenitoZ used, but I have used the VHT brands for a while and find them to be a great value.

i'm wondering if it gets hot enough to need special paint. because
i'm also wondering about wrapping mine in 3m di noc CF always forget to check once i've been for drive how hot it gets ( i'm guessing fairly warm but HOT!!! ??? ) where's yorgi he will tell us if it can be cf wrapped |

Di-Noc can handle 150°F according to 3M. Not bad but probably borderline on how hot it gets under the hood, especially in the summer. Several areas will be much hotter than 150° but the cover itself probably does not get that hot. I would not try di-noc on the valve covers though.
Next time I go for a drive I'll use my infrared temperature gun on the cover and see how hot it gets. Just keep in mind it still only +5°C or 41°F outside, not exactly warm.

hood sound proofing
does anyone else suffer from saggy hood insulation? Mine has shrunk so much that whilst the screws hold it in place it no longer reaches the holding points. If I paint my engine cover I know it will rub on the sound insulation.......

Bad news for di-noc hopefuls. I went for a spin with the top down today (woot) and read temps at a few spots under the hood.
Engine cover: 208°F Engine block: 254°F Air filter cover: 108°F Valve covers: 215°F Hood insulation: 102°F Water pump: 150°F

Thanks for the good info, clearly I will not be able to paint my cover the same as my car as the paint is not suitable for those temperatures, save me making a big mistake.....

Sweet touch!
I wondermif you could use a rustolium or any kind of rattle can paint. Also I see you have an after market air intake, I tried that and I got an engine light on telling me the temperature sensor was bad, once I removed it and put my original intake on the light cleared out after two days. Do you have any problems with yours on any pointers to give us? Thanks again
