CCV question

My wife's X3 had difficulty starting this AM, and when it did finally start it was with a good deal of oil smoke from the exhaust. Checked the oil level then took the car for a spin around the block. Seemed to run OK, no further smoking.

Also checked the battery...it needs replacement, so I'm taking care of that now. Regarding the smoke however, this seems to fit with the CCV sticking that people have described especially since we've had no oil (or smoke!) related problems in the past. My question is the sticking transient, or is it a terminal failure of the part?

Thanks!
