E39 (1997 - 2003)

Advice on getting new cylinder head assembly.

All, Just found out my cylinder head assembly is cooked. Anyone have a lead to get a new or used one... maybe in California? I know new is best, but is refurbished okay?

Yes. not like the full steam or blow-out type over heat, but the termostat redlined. The BMW clinic here replace the radiator last year but left a cracked upper radiator hose and that caused it to overheat. So, I knew to monitor the temp gaug, but it did redline nonetheless. Any tips on getting my babe back on the road again?

How was that determined?

Any reputable cylinder head rebuilder s/b able to deliver a quality product.

Make sure that your mechanic checks the block deck for being straight within tolerance.

My Brother-in-Law is a Chevy mechanic who has done BMW head gasket repair work before. He check block tolerances and determined that was okay. However, we removed hte Head assembly and took it to a machine shop this morning and they said it was shot. They then referd me to an individual who "has a spare cylinder head for the e39" at a cost of $1,350. This sounds high to me, so I am looking for a source of a used cylinder head for a 2003 5251 6 cyl

You have more than just one problem--the engine overheated. It's made of aluminum and when you go back with the head bolts, you may very well pull the threads out of the block. If that happens your going to need timeserts to make the repair. For all the work your doing, I would be looking for a used engine, like a 530 engine and bolt that back and enjoy 40 extra HP. By the time you do all the work with the head and all
you will have about the same money invested. If you go the 530 route, use the intake and the throttlebody and all from the 525. Thats all there will be to it and you'll enjoy better pick up and gas mileage.
