E82 1M Coupe (2011 - 2012)
In many ways the spiritual successor to the E30 M3. Powered by a M derivitive of the N54 the inline six makes 340hp and giving the 1M a 0-60 time of 4.5 seconds.

M-dct 1m??

Any news of BMW doing an M-DCT equipped 1M or do they plan on sticking with 6MT? I'd snap one of those up in a heartbeat.

Nope... BMW M have pretty much categorically stated that this car will be stick only. Why muddy and mask the driving experience with a DCT?

Come on, chicagofan00!! Embrace the incredible beauty that is the 6 speed manual... the clutch... the heel-and-toe!

Yay, verily this mechanism hath been given unto us by the Gods themselves...

Meh, just don't want a 6MT for a daily driver.

It's just not something I want to deal with in the traffic around here and with the length of commute I have. To each their own, no?

I actually agree with this sentiment; manuals aren't for everyone.

I have driven manual cars for years; growing up in Ireland and England I learned to drive with a stick as automatics were rare. I am of the feeling that it's by far the best way to connect with your car, and when I got my 545i I even flew half way across the country to get it because it was a stick. I can only think of one time when I didn't enjoy driving a stick and that was a night when driving my 330i when the conditions were less than perfect and traffic was horrendously snarled in most of the area. Even then though, I only complained a little because my usual half hour drive took me nearly two hours, and all of that was between first and third gears... never higher. My only real problem was my left leg was tired from actuating the clutch and I was frustrated at traffic... but that weekend I took my car on a long drive on windy roads in the country at slightly higher than legal speeds and remembered why I loved my stick shift

But back on-topic; no, BMW won't be releasing a DCT 1 Series M. I think if they'd even consider it, it would be in the third model year. But since this year (and by extension the 1 Series M) pretty much mark the swan song of the current 1'er (maybe one year, max) there might be one more year of the M, but that's it.

HTH

Though having said that; having spent some time in Phoenix I think I'd deal with the occasional traffic snarl in order to take the car up into the mountains on the weekends with a manual transmission... that would be a BLAST!

I'm not by any means saying it wouldn't be a blast to drive on occasions or that it isn't a great way to actually connect with the car but as a daily driver it's just not something I'd like to deal with. Now if I could afford to have it as a weekend car then that be totally cool with me.

I drove the GT2 in LA traffic for three years.

The car has a non assisted clutch.

If people actually know how to properly operate stick shift cars, driving it in traffic really is no big deal. Just pay a small amount of attention with the gap and you hardly ever have to clutch in. If you insists on following the butt of the car in front of you, yes, clutching in every 30 second gets old.

BTW, we still have all manual cars in our fleet, and my wife also drives in LA traffic.

Anyway, I am kicking around the idea of the 1M to replace the E30 as the beater and get around town car, just don't know if the clutch in the 1M is going to be as soft and non feeling as the E9x M's...
