Here's how you COULD have worded it, so that none of us who are trying to be helpful would be confused:

Do us all a favor and try filling up with a tank of super premium (Sunoco Ultra or the like) from a different brand / station than you normally use, and let us know if it makes a difference.
Have to agree with that, sounds like it to me, too. And yes, cheap gas is cheap gas, as with anything else, you get what you pay for. I always put either Shell or BP premium in both my cars. I never use Costco or "no name" gas.

You know, the one thing that really bothers me about diesel is that I really feel like I have no clue what's in the fuel. There are no cetane ratings posted on the pumps, yet there can easily be a 40 cents per gallon price difference between stations. Is the $3.90/gallon Shell diesel better than the $3.55/gallon diesel at the Shell station across town? Probably not, but there is no way to tell.

After picking up my car with a whole new exhaust, I'm still having the same rattling noise. Very upset.

Did they replace just the two mufflers ? Or the whole system from the cat. back ? I've read ur post and had a similiar rattle (haven't taken it in yet). It seems like ur getting the rattle when the car is under load ? (ie. going up hill) I narrowed it down to the muffler in the middle of the underside. If u bang on it u should be able to replicate the rattling ur getting. Hope this helps !

Yes, they were both replaced. Took a ride with the foreman again, he said it was not the exhaust and that he was hearing the noise coming from the front of the car. He thinks it might be the Turbo but does not want to go on record and say it is. He suggested that we wait for the District Mechanic to come by and take a look at the car to determine what the noise is.

The rattling does take place during the " Under Load". Also, last night after parking the car, i revved the enigine and heard a loud fast rattling noise. All in all, not too pleased with my dealership and my car. They did not want to keep my car there until repaired. Plus, it took me 5 times to get them to acknowledge that there is a sound after telling them that I test drove three other x5's.

Got my car back from the dealership. Finally they found out where and what was causing the rattling noise. The noise is coming tfrom the wastegate actuator. Apparrently it's normal. I'm still alittle worried but there's nothing I can do. Hopefully, this does noy cause any issues in the future.

RE:"The noise is coming tfrom the wastegate actuator. Apparrently it's normal" If that answer came from the same service advisor you've been dealing with all along, I'd get a 2nd opinion...sounds like BS all over again.

The rattling noise (metallic rattle) can only be heard when the windows are down. I hear it the best in my office garage. The noise bounces off the wall as I'm going up the Parking garage during the under load on the passenger side. I will upload their comments tomorrow.

I could of told you that it was the wastegate actuators from the beginning..sorry it took so long to find this post.

pretty common on the n54's as well. just do a search in the e90 section.

The reason why the wastegate is rattling during warmup is to keep boost from entering when the engine is cold, and the reason why you hear it going up hill is b/c it's leaking boost to keep it at the programmed amount. Many people have successfully tightened it to keep from rattling, but I wouldn't worry about it, but since you do have it on file w/ the dealer, even after the warranty period they will be obligated to fix it if it was to fail

Are you sure about that? Why would they fix it after the Warrenty period?
