Surprising early mpg - what are you achieving?

I am not overly concerned with gas mileage but I am truly surprised at the mpg I am routinely achieving. My commute from my house in Maryland to my office in downtown DC is 23.5 miles. I unusually encounter both significant brutal stop and go – crawl traffic and some 60 mph cruising along the way. I am averaging about 18 mpg with an average speed of 29.5 mph. Equally, surprising to me is my mileage on the highway. On a recent 250-mile road trip, averaging 75.1 mph, I got 24.5 mpg. I have about 3500 miles on my 550i GT so mileage will only improve.

I am curious….what kind of mileage are you getting - under what conditions?

75.1MPH? Is this the read from the trip computer? I routinely go up and down MD and NYC, a 225 miles trip. It averages 68.3mph but I am no where in 21 mpg. Good day I can get 20+, bad day would be 18+. My condition is first and last 15 miles or so are local traffic, 2 passengers and driver. At times, I hit 100 on I-95 here and there.

Yes - trip computer - all highways miles DC - 270 west to 70 to 68 - Western MD and WV. and back. I have not done DC to NYC yet - I would expect a trip to NYC would be lower given the congestion between DC and Baltimore, the Delaware Bridge, and the final leg into NYC. My road trip only includes maybe 3 or 4 miles local light traffic on the front and back ends, and I hit 100 mph for only very brief moments - too many police and I do not look good in handcuffs. Amazing how fast the traffic goes on the NJT - I use to do NYC to DC in a 911 at least twice a month for a number of years.

Beware of trip computer results for MPG. Mine varies by over 1.5 high to .1 low. When I thought I was getting 31.8 mpg on a 300 mile trip it was barely above 30mpg. This is with 535i GT

Hmmmm……only a little over 30 mpg……shameful

You would think a 4600+ lb. vehicle packing a turbo 6 with an output of 300 hp
– capable of 0-60 in a tick over 6 seconds and a top speed of 150 mph – would do better.

Seriously, 30 or 31.8 is just amazing given the performance, luxury, and utility of the
535i GT.

Thank you for the info on the trip computer, I will beware.

Just did another 235 miles trip between NYC and DC. I just couldn't achieve 23+ MPG. The finally number was 19.4. The average speed was 68.8. I actually averaged 78.4 before leaving NJ turnpike to Lincoln Tunnel. From there, urban traffic just brought the average speed down hill. You might wonder 78.4 mph?? Well, yes but with only one stop for gas and bathroom. It helped that daughter was asleep 80% of time, traffic was light most part and no one was pumping gas as I entered the gas station. Highest speed - 109 mph. It was on Millard Tydings Memorial Bridge. A toll bridge with a long straight and light traffic.

I get around 16 or so on average, funny thing is that my mpg is actually going down as mileage is increasing (10k on the clock). Doesnt make sense, I also burn a lot of oil, but since Im not paying for it Im not that concerned.

My ave mileage remains about 23.5mpg and I burn no oil at 7000 miles. If it burned oil I'd be very disturbed. I had the oil changed at 5000 and analysed. It showed higher metallic wear than average. This is to be expected but it looks like I would have to go about 18,000 to 20,000 before an oil change based on the dashboard reading. That's too long.

I burned through around 9 qts in the 1st 10k, dealer said 1qt per thousand miles was ok and in tolerance. There is an actual test they can do, but it requires going to dealer, getting checked, then returning to dealer when light comes on. I dont have that kinda time to waste (my dealer is 1+hour away) and am not fond of the dealers close if any work was required.

So

So
I have only about 4500 miles on my 550i GT and I have not added any oil to date...I hope this continues.

(My 335i required about 1 quart per 1500 miles)

On a 600 mile trip, average was 24.5 mpg. Speed average was 41.6 as it varied between freway, city and the Pacific Coast Highway. I thought this was pretty good. On one stretch between fills, mostly freeway at 70-75, the mileage showed at 25.5 on the computer. I'm too lazy to figure it out on paper anyway. It's better than the Cadillac I traded in and so much more car. But then again, I can say I owned a piece of Detroit crap for two months and tried to help the economy. Feel like I was giving to some charity with that thing! Love the BMW's.

I just hit the 8000 mile mark.

My mileage for my daily commute to downtown DC
is averaging about 18.1 mpg.

My commute is about 20 miles and I usually encounter
some significant traffic.

I am averaging about 24 mpg on weekend trips of about 250 miles.

I am very pleased with these numbers given the power and weight
of my 550i GT - really not much different than my 335i vert 6MT.

It's interesting to hear the mpg results. On the window sticker of our 335i GT, it said 20/30 city/highway. We have yet to break the 20 mark on a tank of gas, and we commute canyons and freeway. I would think we would have somewhere between 20/30, but alas, only 18.5. I've never had a window sticker gas rating be as misleading. Our other cars have been very on the mark with their ratings. What gives?

Recent purchase?

My mileage increased as I put on a few thousand miles.

In city driving with a little freeway thrown in, I'm seeing about 18.5 average. However, freeway driving (75-80) with a bit of city shows the same 24.5 this past week as I got in March. That leads me to believe I'd achieve somewhere around the 28 mark or above if I had a long freeway only trip on cruise. Not as good as the 328i which did 31 on a trip to Washington State bot not bad for a much bigger. more comfortable car!
