2007 premium sound system vs 2011 harman kardon system

So I currently have the 2007 model 335i with the premium sound system which I believe was harman kardon.

I have ordered a new 335 with the harman kardon system and wonder if there is any difference at all except the fact they now put their name on it?

Both systems are manufactured by Harman Kardon, and both systems feature Logic7 sound processing; however, the marketers decided to shift the branding focus from "Logic7" to "Harman Kardon". I can also confirm that there are 2 fewer speaker for the coupe in MY2011. Although there are speaker grills in the rear deck, there are no speakers in them. Total speaker count has been reduced from 13 to 11. Special shout out to the bean counters and unfavorable exchange rate.

I had a 2007 E93 with the Logic 7 system. I now have a 2011 E91 with the HK system. There are small differences in how the audio / tone settings are adjusted through iDrive --- but it sounds virtually the same. Surround sound and very clean frequency band. No worries.

I didnt even know I had 13 speakers.. damn,thats nuts.

I only count 7 in my new car (vert) w/HK. Two in the rear, one on each side (~ 4in. diameter). One in each front door panel, above the armrest (same size as rear). One tweeter in each door at side mirror level (1.5" I believe). And one in the center of the dashboard on top (below a square grill, ~ 4-5" square).

BTW it sounds awesome even with the top down!!!

You also have two subs--one under each front seat. That brings your total to at least 9.

I think the other two speakers you missed are in the back seat. In the coupe, there are two speakers on each side in the rear (one tweeter + one mid range).

Ah ha. Now I know why the bass sounds so good in the front. I will look again but I don't think I have the separate tweeters in the back seats. My 2004 330ci has those tho....

The premium (also called Hi Fi)should be called the mediocre system it does not have logic 7 processing or as many or as high quality of speakers as does the logic 7(also called top Hi Fi), or as much power as the relabeled HK (logic 7)system.
The new premium system has had the rear tweeters deleted.

WHAT??? They screwed me out of two speakers??? I'm going out to the car and look right now.

That document you referenced is from 2008. I owned a 2007 E92 with Logic7--it had 13 speakers. I now own a 2011.5 E92 with Harman Kardon--it has 11 speakers:

-center dash: 1
-mid-range in each door: 2
-tweeter in each door: 2
-sub under each front seat:2
-mid-range, side rear: 2
-tweeter, side rear: 2

The number of speakers in the coupe and convertible are the same; however, the coupe has a 420W amp vs. only 340W in the convertible (this seems backwards to me, but oh well). Both systems have Logic7 processing.

I have the HI-FI 10 speaker system and its one bad a$$ unit. I can imagine what the TOP HI-FI would sound like

Ok I have the bad a$$ basic sound in my 328i sedan Can anyone confirm what I identified?

Four speakers, one on each door, two subs, one under each front seat.

Will there be any tangible benefit if I just upgrade these 6 speakers?

You are right. I have mid AND tweeters in the back seat. 11 total in the car. Sound is actually very good. I am very pleased.

In model year 2010 in the US they slipped in the lowest grade system they make world wide.
It has no Amp and no Tweeters . If you look in that document in the above thread I posted
you will find it described as the stereo system . There are three systems that were released world wide. But until the 2010 early 2011 build the base or stereo system never slipped into the US market. That document from 2008 is the best description I have found for the three systems.

Many in the US felt shortchanged by this system so BMW changed back to the premium or Hi Fi system after/in september of 2010.

Just changing the speakers in that system will not help is it suffers from lack of power
a head unit eq curve that is set up to compensate for a lack of tweeters.
It requires a processor to flatten the output of the head unit , and amp and speakers to improve it.

My 2011 328 with a manufacture date of 5/10 has 13 speakers and it rocks!!! Awesome system and the bass is insane.

Thanks for the info. Luckily I am not much an audiophile, most of the time I'd rather listen to my engine rev

The HK system or Logic 7 is quite decent. New or Old
Its well worth the extra money you pay for it but is hard to modify.

I have the logic7 surround option accessible from the idrive audio menu, in my 07 335i. Does that mean I have the standard audio (since no HK logo on the tweeters), or premium audio?

The H-K upgrade in my '11 Sedan is very similar to the Logic-7 in my '06 Sedan. The speakers are a different color and the amp is a different model, but the sound is very comparable.

Quite good IMHO but not like the competition systems my brother puts into his cars. Last car he had the stereo was worth more than the car.

You have premium. The change to calling it HK instead of Logic7 and addition of the HK logo just happened a year or so ago. Logic7 was also standard on your car in 07.

My 2011 e92 has speakers in the rear deck total 13 speakers.
