Because he asked me on the previous page what maintenance I have done to my car so far. And my car is auto.

I think he meant maintenance for transmission, otherwise neither question nor answer makes sense in context of the topic.

True, I was wondering about what maintenance was done to the tranny.

Tranny reported done by BMW Dealer
I received the dreaded ! signal. The limp rev in drive. No problem in reverse.
I took my 330 Ci 2003 to the dealer and was told it was a computer problem and that after they re-initialized or whatever.. that it was okay. Drove off and everything seemed fine. 24 hours and 35 miles later the ! signal returns off and on and eventually limp mode returns. I return to dealer and was told the Trans is Kaput and $7K will bring it back like new. I am in Vienna Virginia and am in need of a second opinion and based on the forum to try a fluid change first before a complete heart replacement. Any suggestions. Oh bought it used no trans oil changed added 35K to 110K mileage. Currently odometer is 143K bought it in 2009. No racing. Replaced steering pump, brakes, tires, that's about it. that weird... its not showing me that.. perhaps ive not voted
but by the looks of it... everyone is coming out of the closet and admitting that there autotragic's are ticking time bomb's guess its not that bad for the crew that still has less then 100k on the car see ya in 200,000 mile

I'm at 185000 on a 2002 325i. No maintenance or repairs of any kind to the tranny. (Can you hear me knocking on wood?) I think it's bad karma to replace the transmission fluid.

@majorpeace:
Did you get your issue resolved? If not, please let me know as I have code read-out and reset capabilities. This way you should know exactly what is going on with your car. Car & Key Memory and some recoding can be done with me, as well. Just PM me. |

De coder
Thanks for the reply, and yes I got it sorted, the fault light was up due to a perished hoser that was sucking air into the Engine.
I replaced the sump oil level sender woith one I brought from Pelican parts in your country, even with the exchange rate in Kiwi dollars and postage, it was only half the price, of buying the same thihg in NZ, Mc Millan BMW wanted 375.00kiwi do0llars for the sender, I brought mine for 180Am , not bad eh.

About 123k km with no repairs. At around 60k km, I got the "!" and the Dealer "reset" the tranny control module. No more issues after that (KNOCK ON WOOD!!!).
I will do a fluid change with all associated work soon. Interestingly enough, Bav Auto has the repair parts for the M56 SULEV engined E46's ONLY, which happens to be my car. |

Auto transmission replacement
My transmission started failing with thankfully a rather gracefull degradation of performance. Here is a short timeline of the issues.
~135K slipping and hesitation to shift from 1st - 2nd especially on hard acceleration. ~140K started noticing 4th-5th "uncertainty" again when pushing hard. ~150K first episode of missing reverse, came back after a few miles ~155K missing reverse becoming more frequent (now once every two weeks) ~160K missing reverse a complete lottery (changed parking habits, always backed into spots - test to see if I HAD reverse. Avoided using valet parking even if it was free). Reading the posts and threads on transmission issues (especially no reverse) was very helpful. - Thanks |

I Need help I am new to the BMW community and recently bought a used 2000 323i with a triptronic automatic trans w/ 145,000 mile for $3900. Now I know these cars car high maintenance and so far have put a few hundred fixing several issues. My car struggles to hit gears and im not sure if I should rebuild the trans or get a new one. I do know I have bad coils ,boots, and possibly spark plugs which contributes to the struggle and extremly sluggish acceleration. What should I do????
