Recommended Maintenance Schedule

I have a 2008 X3. I'd like to put together a maintenance schedule that I can use as a guide and check off items as I perform them throughout the 'life' of my car (2008 X3). I plan to keep this car for well past 100k miles so I prefer to lean towards a more aggressive schedule rather than one that will just get me by. I know the dealer says that some fluids are 'lifetime' but that's simply not going to cut it for me. Please help me out by filling in the blanks (???) below or offering any changes, additions, or recommendations. I have yet to find a thread that adequately and concisely answer this question but if it's out there, please feel free to post a link. Here's what I have so far.

Oil & Oil Filter Change – Every 5k miles

Brake Fluid Flush – Every 2 years

Spark Plugs – Every 100k miles

Air Filter (Engine) – Every 60k miles

Air Filter (Cabin) – Every 60k miles

Automatic Transmission Fluid Change - ???

Transfer Case Fluid Change - ???

Front & Rear Differential Fluid Change - ???

Coolant Change - ???

What am I missing? (I know there's more)

Brake fluid degrades based on time, not mileage. I think it's every two years for changes. But I've never changed it that often.

I just had the transfer case and both diffs fluids changed at 107k. The indy tech said the computer had a fault code for excessive wear/fluid degradation in the transfer case (but the fault code doesn't trigger a light so you don't know it). He said it usually happens around 100k. Knowing what I do now I would change those three at 80k.

I asked about transmission fluid and they said it's so rare for them to see a BMW with transmission failure they don't even recommend changing the fluid.

I like to do things in groups, so I'd do the plugs at 80k. If you won't keep the X3 past 160-180k, then you'll only have to change them once if you do it at 80k or at 100k.

Thanks. I corrected my original post. I think I recall hearing / reading that too.

My dealer just said to change transmission and antifreeze at 100k miles.

You won't get a consenus because everyone has different views of BMW's recommended service,
not to mention different annual mileage, driving style, climate, operating environment, city/hwy., gravel roads, etc.

For example, I view it quite differently from you (other than brake fluid):

Oil & Oil Filter Change – Every 10k miles (assuming oil meeting BMW spec.)

Brake Fluid Flush – every 2 years or so

Spark Plugs – every 60K miles (as specified for my year - but might delay if no symptoms)

Air Filter (Engine) – every 25K miles (cheap and easy enough so not worth risking)

Air Filter (Cabin) – every year (or at least inspect and tap the accumulation off)

Automatic Transmission Fluid Change - going with specerb's indy tech on this one (never)

Transfer Case Fluid Change - 40K miles (it's a busy box and can bite you evidently)

Rear Differential Fluid Change - 60K miles (owners report this gets blacker than front one)

Front Differential Fluid Change - 80K miles

Coolant Change - every 4 years (partial change via radiator drain might be good enough)

Power steering fluid - partial change every 60K miles (with turkey baster)

Lots of scope for debate. For example, you could argue that a new air filter does not filter as efficiently as one that's been in there for 40K miles.

On mine:

K&N Air filter cleaned every 15k
Cabin filter every year
Brake fluid: 2 years
Coolant: 4 years
Power Steering: 60,000 miles
Engine Oil and filter: 5000 or 7500; depends on what blackstone says
Differentials: 60k
Transfer Case: 30k
Auto Trans: 60k drain and fill

With all the dirty MAF issues I read about, be careful with oiled filters. A little too much oil could cause major issues!

In regard to air filters, is there any recommended one here on the forum, or should I just go with the OEM one? Thanks.

Considering I do all of the above and missed a leaking differential seal at 61k.... I would add remove lower modesty cover every 10k and inspect seals and check for leaks....

How would one go about replacing the Xfer case fluid on an automatic 2007?

Do a search on the forum.

Basically:

Remove bottom plastic pan for access.

Loosen fill plug first.

Drain using drain plug. I believe this is an allen fitting (could be fill plug too, I believe 14 mm).

Fill with BMW Transfer case fluid through fill port until fluid begins to dribble out (indicating full - about 0.7 liters).

Replace fill plug.

Clean up

Replace bottom plastic pan.

Reward yourself with a cold frosty beverage of your choice.

Note: BMW transfer case fluid is about $50/liter, so expensive. BMWCCA discount, if you are a member, gets you 20% off.

Just bumping this thread as I'm approaching the 50k mark and was thinking about doing the transfer case fluid service (Those darn ECS Tuning email flyers actually work).

I see a lot of different opionions on the transfer case fluid change intervals - ranging anywhere from 30 - 60k miles. Perhaps I'll just wait till I get to 60k and do the the transfer case, front, and rear diffs (and just repeat this every 60k). What say the experts here?

I think it depends on your particular driving environment. I do mostly highway. Changed diff and transfer case fluids at 70k miles. Changed transmission fluid at 100k miles. Looked about right for me.

Heavy stop/go, short distances = change more often. Probably at 50k miles or less.

No oil tests to prove. Just my thoughts and experience with my vehicles!
