E30 (1982 - 1993)
God's Chariot. The E30 was produced primarily from 1982 through 1991. The cabriolet was the one exception which was produced through 1993.

87 325 manual as a toad behind RV

Hi Folks,

Has anyone towed an E30 manual-trans, 4 wheels down behind an RV? I know the automatics are out but how about the manual?

pick up the rears and lock the steering wheel.

The owners manual only recommends rear wheels down towing for a handful of miles.

I towed a purchased non running 325, rear wheels down after I disconnected the driveshaft at the differential and tied it to the rear subframe.

How many miles will you tow? Average speed?

If it can work I would pull it behind the RV. This could be trips up to a few thousand miles and at highway speeds so 50-65 mph. If this is not harmful to the car I still need to figure out a tow bar and baseplate setup. I am researching the RV sites for that.

For that many miles I would tow with the rear up, just to save the hassle of connecting/disconnecting the drive shaft. I would strap the steering wheel somehow instead of using the ignition lock...

I just talked to several towing accessories companies and no-one has test a BMW. Lots of "tribal knowledge" that they can be pulled but no definitive testing or evaluation. I think I might just look for another car to do this with or go with a dolly.

I doubt you will find a less complicated, robust, fun, affordable car

I have had the E30 (87325is) sitting for a couple years now. It was my wife's primary driver and then both my sons used it as a first car for HS. It needs some work but is still all there with 245K miles. Needs a valve job and the paint is falling but other than that is in good shape. I thought this might be a fitting "next life" for the old work horse. If not towing then maybe I will sell it. I was thinking about getting it all sported up for a toy but then I bought a 03 Z4.....I have my toy now.
