venice or verona?
we can spend a day in either town but not both. in case of venice, we would probably spend the night in jesolo and take the ferry over.
personally i haven't been to italy, significant other has been to venice on vacation. i'll be coming from salzburg (via grossglockner) and after spending a day in either continue on to cinque terre (via maranello).

Venice is worth visiting for a day. The Doge's Palace and the Basilica San Marco are amazing.
I haven't been to Verona. For Venice, please plan on the city shutting down at ~8pm, because it does.

Wife and I spent three days/two nights in Verona in July of 2008. We cannot WAIT to get back there again. Wife has been to Venice (previously) and in comparing the two, she enjoyed Verona much more. That said, she is of the opinion that Venice is better for a "one day stay" than Verona.

I would only do venice if you are getting there very early in the morning and leaving around dinner. Venice would also be a little more hectic than verona but maybe worth it if one of you hasn't been. However, I think verona is highly underrated. Rarely will you hear of someone who didn't enjoy their time there.
We had the same choice to make on our upcoming trip but for a three night stay. My S.O. hasn't been to either place. I chose verona for our stay because I think it is more relaxing and less crowded with lots and lots of beautiful things to see. I view venice kind of like disneyland for adults as its worth the trip at least once. I will wait to take her when we do the grand tour of venice, florence, and rome by train in a vacation all its own. |

If you have not been to either, I would at least make a stop in Venice. It is a "bit" tourist overrun but one should at least have a drink on the Grand Canal, preferably away from a Vaporetto stop and then just wander around until you find a small piazza and have another drink. Remember, while wandering, you cannot get really lost since you are on an Island.
Cheers
