850i - How much oil consumption is "normal"
I am looking at purchasing an 850i, so I've been trying to learn about common issues with these cars. I am considering one in particular, but it's 2200+ miles away. It's a 6-speed with the color combination I want, but I have some reservations about it. The owner told me that the engine "blew up" when the previous owner had it and that a rebuilt engine was installed. The mileage shown is just under 90K, but if the engine was replaced with a rebuilt one, who knows what the true mileage really is. The owner says that there are no engine leaks, but it burns about a quart between oil changes (appx. 3,000 miles). That raised my eyebrow. I have a Jaguar XJS V-12 and it doesn't burn any oil. Granted, it only has 32K miles.
So, is it "normal" for an 850 to burn oil at this rate? |

no, not normal. My 250,000 mile motor doesn't even use that much oil....

Thanks for the reply. I will pass on this one. Too bad, it was a 6-speed manual
